Recycling system within HQ Office
which allows us to have a consistency in terms of pricing and the advantages of buying our energy through a bigger Central Government Contract. In addition it has allowed us to have one point of contact for all energy queries.
As well as this work we have installed Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Equipment across the UK portfolio including the Highlands and Island of Scotland. This is allowing us to centrally manage energy consumption by firstly allowing us to measure it. In some cases there have been no accurate bills for years. Now that we are able to measure our energy consumption accurately we can benchmark our buildings. We now publish real-time figures for every property each month and this has seen our consumption fall by 30-40 % illustrating how awareness helps people identify that small things do make a difference. On top of this we have had a full light replacement at our HQ Building with new efficient lights which dim and brighten in accordance with the natural daylight; we have also replaced all lights within lifts and conference areas. This together with reduced opening hours has resulted in our DEC being issued at a D grade – up from an initial G in 2008-9. We are also hoping that these initiatives will make a significant contribution towards our 10% Carbon reduction target announced recently by the Prime Minster.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Dealing with waste across the entire UK is a formidable task; add to that the fact that we have so many small unoccupied buildings on the edge of a cliff and recycling targets do present a challenge. To tackle this we have come up with a Waste Strategy as part of our overall EMS system. We have licensed all of our vehicles to carry small amounts of non hazardous waste from our small unmanned building to our larger Sector Buildings where waste can be recycled. In our offices we have introduced waste segregation wherever possible and this has seen our recycling figures increase significantly from 30% to 70 % at
our Head Office site in just two years.
WATER We are currently undertaking a full water audit looking at ways in which we could improve efficiency, detect any leaks earlier and raise awareness. Our water consumption has always been fairly low but has fallen significantly over the last two years. One way we are improving our consumption is by having meters installed this gives us visibility and helps us raise awareness. Despite the fact that our water consumption has continued to reduce we still manage to keep our helicopters and coastguard vehicles as shiny as ever!
