and use of plain paper has consistently been met and often surpassed. Based on the last four years alone we have reduced our electricity consumption by 21%. That is equivalent to 333MWh or 177 tonnes of CO2

.

harp is very conscious of its obligations to reduce the impact on the environment from its global business activities and has a Super Green Strategy that addresses every aspect of its operations. Sharp’s main objectives are to become an environmentally advanced company which means balancing business development and growth with the environment protection and to offset it carbon emissions via energy saving and energy creating products.

S

The two main key factors are making products that are energy efficient and increase production of energy creating products, such as solar panels, to reduce reliance on fossils fuels and help contribute towards the targets set by the governments for 2020 and 2030 to reduce greenhouse gases globally. The application for the Sustainable FM Awards 2010 made here is based on local environmental performance of Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd (www.sharp.co.uk) over more than a decade. It does not include Sharp Corporation’s extensive activities and successes.

ENERGY SAVING

Sharp Electronics (UK) limited is registered with SGS to the environmental management system in accordance with the well recognised international standard ISO14001. We have been registered since about 2002. Over the last 8 years we have made significant reductions in our energy consumptions, waste and increased our recycling activites. Our target of 5% YoY for reduction of energy

All floors have full set of recycling bins as shown here for tins/cans, plastic bottles, glass and batteries.

HOW DID WE ACHIEVE THESE SAVINGS? 1) We have fitted in our office building light sensors that detect movement and switch on lights only where needed. This technique prevents the offices, meeting rooms and many other areas from being unnecessary illuminated when not in use, which releases CO2

in the atmosphere for no purpose whatsoever.

2) We have a range of low energy lighting such as compact energy efficient fluorescent tubes, LEDs, etc… to ensure when they are on they are consuming as little energy as possible. In addition we are continually reviewing potential solutions to enhance further our energy saving.

3) We supplement our power demand by generating our own electricity by solar panels. We have 32 Sharp solar panels installed on top of the roof of the building since June 2006 and to date they have generated 17.78MWh and saved just under 8 tonnes on CO2

.

4) All office equipment is turned off at the end of the day and at weekends with the exception of the computer servers. They are then switched on again at about 6am by the security department to reduce energy consumption.

5) We have conducted training sessions for staff to save energy by cooperating in switching off equipment as soon as they are not longer required for example, ac adaptors for charging mobiles phones, which left on continue to draw power. The training consisted of messages and posters and last year we held one week of training where we invited external speakers and exhibitors to help

4| SUSTAINABLE FM AWARDS 2010 reinforce our message to staff.

6) We have introduced smart meters to staff to monitor their own consumptions.

7) The air conditioning system consisted of four single speed fans, each consuming 20KW. These have now been replaced by variable speed fan drives which saves up to 30% in energy consumption.

8) We are also investigating voltage optimisation technique to further reduce our electricity consumption.

9) To reinforce our commitment to lower our impact on the global warming we signed a contract with npower to deliver 100% green electricity and we supplement this via solar panels installed on roof of our offices. Our environmental achievement has been recognised by the award of the Carbon Trust Standard which we achieved in January 2010. This clearly demonstrates our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and will continue to do so for the future.

Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd has also been recognised by Sharp Corporation under its Super Green Strategy, and awarded us the status of “Green Office”. This means that we have met their rigorous criteria and demands for reducing energy consumption, waste, increased recycling, improved our communication on environmental matters, educate employees to be proactive and hold environmental events to raise awareness of the importance of the environment protection.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Sharp Electronics (UK) Limited has,

generally, a low impact on the environment but environment is the responsibility of everyone, regardless of how insignificant the impact is, to do more to help curb global warming. Sharp has been proactive in environment protection since 1999. 1) In 2002 Sharp introduced ISO14001 and set a target to reduce paper consumption year on year by 5%.

2) In 1999 we used some 4150,000
