SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR – OFFICE PRODUCTS

Schneider – The Office Product Network Ltd RUNNER UP

10 years. The planet’s natural resources are finite and deserve to be used sensibly and treated with respect. For this reason, it is very important to SCHNEIDER that as a company we focus on energy efficiency, best possible reduction of carbon emissions and avoidance of excessive waste in our production facilities. All products are constructed for durability and guarantee long-term comfortable use, with all the knowledge, innovation and competence of a responsible trademark. Since 1998, SCHNEIDER has been certified with the world’s most superior regulation, the EU Eco Management and Audit Scheme, EMAS.

P PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Many goals have been achieved in the past, including the more efficient use of thermal energy, savings in electricity, and the use of regenerative energy, saving on the use of basic materials and waste reduction. Future environmental goals include savings on electrical energy, fuel consumption, the increase of energy efficiency and reduction in waste. Our environmental policy is ongoing and forever evolving.

EMPLOYEES

A total of 260 employees work in development, laboratory, manufacture, production, marketing, sales, purchasing and administration. A free bus runs between the two company offices and are provided several times daily – saving numerous individual car journeys and wasted fuel. Consistent environmentally optimized manufacturing processes, reduce our requirements for oils, solvents and cleaning agents year by year and lead to a continuous reduction in waste - each of our employees is actively involved in this process.

POWER

SCHNEIDER is consistent in its use of regenerative energy sources and electricity, being 100% hydrogen generated natural power. This avoids CO2

emissions of

approx. 1,800 tons per annum. By employing modern thermal recovery

plants, a large portion of the thermal waste generated during production can be used for heating purposes, which significantly improves our overall energy balance. In addition, we generate roughly 22,000 kWh of electrical energy per annum from our photo- voltaic plant. Heat is recovered from the waste heat expelled in the injection moulding department, via a rotary air-to-air heat exchanger, as well as from the newly installed ventilation unit in the manufacturing departments. Production consumes energy – there is no getting away from it – but by implementing these targeted energy saving measures, we can preserve environmental resources where ever possible.

MANUFACTURING

During the plastic moulding process, 100% sprue bushes are brought back to the production process through a material feedback system, which allows them to be completely recycled. This is done with surplus product components, saving valuable resources and preserving our environment. Consistent environmentally optimized manufacturing processes, reduce our requirement for oils, solvents and cleaning agents year by year and lead to a continuous reduction in waste.

PACKAGING

SCHNEIDER completely renounces the use of PVC on products and packaging. SCHNEIDER uses alternative ‘superior’ materials such as PET and PP, which are purer than PVC and are environmentally neutral. For folding boxes and disposable displays we nearly exclusively use carton quality GD2 with at least an 80% recycled paper content. Shipment of the product is in corrugated cardboard cartons, usually on Euro pallets, protected by stretch film. For export shipments, disposable pallets are also used. Cardboard and wood account for approx 90% of the total packaging used.

WASTE

90% of waste from both our production and headquarters are recyclable.

AND FINALLY

A SCHNEIDER pen will give writing pleasure for a long time, protecting the environment right the way through the manufacture process.

protection policies also mean active consumer protection. On the selection of materials and substances for new

products we strictly adhere to the latest EU regulations for environment and consumer protection. Plastics used are 100% guaranteed to be free of cadmium, critical flexibilisers (phthalates) and heavy metals. The dye components of our inks conform to the high requirements of the Swiss commodities decree. When it’s about the health of people and protection of our environment, we do not compromise.

PRODUCTS

SCHNEIDER is a strong brand with leading technology. During the design process and material selection for a new product, we ensure materials are of the highest quality and longevity, whilst still paying attention to the impact on the environment. The plastics used are recyclable and environmentally neutral. All high value SCHNEIDER refills are equipped with a wear resistant stainless steel tip, which guarantees clean and complete use of the ink. The innovative rotation mechanism in our ball point pens avoids one-sided wear of the tip. Clever refilling concepts prolong the shelf life – examples are the Plug & Play; that ensure purchasing choice with many compatible and interchangeable ballpoint and gel writer refills, extending the life of each pen. And, the MAXX Markers; again the pen outer can be re-used by installing a refill cartridge made from completely recycled plastics, cleanly and efficiently with no mess.
