MOST SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC SECTOR ORGANISATION – LOCAL AUTHORITY

Green Energy Centres DEAC are working closely with the Green Energy Centres, and are managing their advice lines.

Volunteer-run Energy Advice Centres DEAC support three outreach energy advice centres using voluntary staff; one in Weymouth, one in Christchurch, and one in West Howe. DEAC supply training and materials.

Climate Change Workshops DEAC works with many partners, including Southwest Tourism, Local Authorities, Environmental Agencies, the university, landlord forums and associations GOSW, as well as County and Local Authorities to develop climate change strategies. DEAC recognises and promotes the work of other companies and projects across the County who are also working to reduce their carbon footprint and who promote sustainable living in Dorset.

INNOVATION AND PRODUCT SELECTION/DIVERSITY

Building on many years of experience

the DEAC team are well versed in every aspect of Energy Efficiency, renewable technologies, transport, lighting, insulation and the grants that are available to help and advise the residents of Dorset and beyond, on saving energy in the home. The company work with and advise a diverse range of individuals, community groups, and other organisations as well as businesses all over the County of Dorset and beyond. DEAC consistently work hard to encourage and make sure that everyone in our County’s community has access to their advice, no matter what their circumstances and they strongly believe that saving energy helps everyone.

PROJECTS DEAC’s Project Team, designs, develops and delivers a range of award winning projects. These include:

Landlords’ Project Following our win of the regional heat in April, Dorset Energy Advice Centre are now pleased to announce that we have

won the national NEA Footprint award for Bigger Steps, Smaller Footprint. DEAC have won this award for the Bournemouth Landlords Project, which is managed by Pete Bywater. This project has insulated 7,500 dwellings for 750 local landlords and made savings in CO2

emissions of

over 8,000 tonnes per year. It has also brought almost £1.8M of utility funding into the area.

Bournemouth A-to-D Project DEAC are working with Bournemouth Borough Council to provide free cavity wall and loft insulation up to the value of £1000, to Bournemouth residents over 60 years of age living in properties that fall into council tax bands A, B, C, and D.

Biomass Boilers in Poole DEAC has been working with Borough

of Poole to identify three community buildings who are now the subject of feasibility studies for installing wood-chip boilers to provide heat and hot water to the properties.

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs for Landlords) DEAC provide an EPC service to landlords and letting agents in Dorset, using locally based Domestic Energy Assessors who are experts in energy efficiency, or the building or property industry. They also supply free low energy light bulbs and hot water tank jackets.

NI 187 NI 187 is the indicator for fuel

poverty. Local authorities reporting on this indicator are required to survey at least 400 households in receipt of income related benefits. DEAC successfully carry out this service for ten local authorities in the South West.

Phil Neale, DEAC’s Director/Centre Manager is continuously looking at new projects to take the Centre forward in to new areas of sustainability.

CARBON REDUCTION COMMITMENT DEAC is not driven by profit, but by the knowledge that their commitment makes a difference across the entire county. To support this their display banners generic caption is just that, “How

we make a difference”.

The company employs 8 highly qualified and experienced members of staff and has around 20 volunteers. Each team member is totally committed to the vision and work of the organization and one member of staff has been an active environmental campaigner for over 20 years.

DEAC receive some 13,000 phone calls a year from the residents of Dorset and now beyond, requesting advice on saving energy.

Outside of all their projects, 7,000 of these enquiries turn into real energy efficiency measures being installed, making that difference to householders fuel bills and energy demand.

A number of staff are keen to cycle to work and so DEAC have signed up to the ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme (www.cyclescheme.co.uk), which provides savings for staff when purchasing a new bike.

The team of volunteers at Weymouth

and at Christchurch Libraries are provided training and support and equipped with tools and resources such as energy saving light bulbs, leaflets and carbon footprint questionnaires. Working with volunteers enables DEAC to broaden the scope of its work. It also provides interesting opportunities for volunteers to learn more about environmental issues. Statistics show that households receiving energy advice save an average of £58 per year and half a tonne of carbon dioxide. So in Christchurch alone that’s a saving of £165,880 or 1412 tonnes of carbon dioxide! www.deac.co.uk
