Nova Scotia FAMILY JOURNEY Morocco FAMILY JOURNEY

Our own kids say it was their best day EVER. Four-wheeling the Moroccan plains, swaying on a camel into steep Saharan dunes at sunset, then settling into a Berber encampment to eat and dance around the campfire before nodding off in a carpeted luxury tent. The very best day…unless you count hanging out with shepherd families, watching snake charmers, squeezing past donkey carts in the ancient alleys of Fès, or biking along the dikes in an oasis. The terrain ranges from snow-capped mountains to lush valleys studded with date palms. You’ll meet members of our extended Classic Journeys family who welcome us onto their farms and into their homes. We stay in lovely hotels, all with swimming pools. And the best surprise is the warmth with which the Moroccans welcome us and make everyone feel comfortable and well cared for.

THE KIDS WILL LOVE…

• Sand surfing on the world’s highest dunes • Playing drums around a Berber campfire • Riding mules through small farming villages

ITINERARY

We meet in Fès (2 nights) at our palace-turned- hotel for a stroll that includes a 16th century fortress and pottery-making for the kids. At our friends’ country estate, the kids ride mountain bikes or donkeys. And we go time-traveling to the 9th century as we explore the Medina before dinner at one of Morocco’s finest restaurants.

Heading into the Middle Atlas Mountains to Erfoud (1 night), we walk in cedar forests inhabit- ed by Barbary apes. We’ll meet farmers in their fields on a path to the home of a Blue Man fami- ly. Later, we 4-wheel into the Sahara to overnight at a Berber encampment with all the amenities.

En route to Ouarzazate (3 nights) we’ll walk in the 900-foot-deep Todra gorge…go biking in an oasis...ramble the Atlas foothills with the kids on muleback...and meet the students at a small country school. Our last stop is Marrakesh (2 nights). We’ll visit Djemaa el-Fna Square to see the snake charmers. There’s shopping in the souks and a final dinner in a private mansion.

Everybody in your family who’s in favor of having National Geographic moments, raise your hands.Nova Scotia—whale- watching, bog-hopping, lobster-fishing, sea kayaking, coastal walking Nova Scotia—is for you. Our own kids

absolutely love it here. There’s a ton of fascinating history, but you don’t feel like you’re in a museum. The towns we visit are some of the continent’s old- est. And the rugged coastlines and piney forests are as pristine as when the first colonists arrived. In true Family Journeys’ style, our local guides enable the generations to go their separate ways once in a while. So while you shop or study theVictorian architecture, they take in a butterfly garden or hear tales from an old salt.Whether you’re canoeing in the wake of the native Mi’kmaqs or sprawled on the deck in the crazily late sunset, you’ll all have a fantastic time together.

THE KIDS WILL LOVE…

• Sea kayaking in a scenic bay • Discovering 5,000-year-old Indian stone paintings • Exploring islands by private lobster boat

ITINERARY

We meet in Halifax, where we grab some ice cream on our walk of the historic town. Later we eat dinner by a famous lighthouse and settle into Lunenburg (3 nights), an 18th century fishing village that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With a lesson from our local guide, we climb into sea kayaks to paddle out for a picnic on an almost uninhabited island in Mahone Bay. We’ll also spend a memorable day with a local friend who loads us on his lobster boat to chug out among islands for a lobster bake and walk.

Annapolis Royal, Canada’s birthplace, is our home for 2 nights. From our Victorian inn, we’ll head to beautiful Kejimkujic National Park for a canoe trip or woodland hike. And our timing is just right to watch humpback and Minke whales. On our final day, the kids play capture the flag while the rest of us take a walking tour of Annapolis Royal. Before returning to Halifax, we walk to Halls Harbour, scene of the Bay of Fundy’s awesome 45-foot tides.
