Nova Scotia’s Coasts &Villages A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE
When you travel it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Take Bill and Hillary—as in Bill the lobsterman and his wife
Hillary, a Cordon Bleu chef. These two friends of ours could keep their private island to themselves. But Bill ferries us out to a private lunch. And shall we just say that Hillary is not your typical home cook?

In Nova Scotia,we keep imagining there’s a National Geographic cameraman nearby. Every moment is so beautiful, it’s hard to believe that no one is getting it on film. Consider the natural history. This is the place of 45-foot tides in the Bay of Fundy, great gatherings of whales, tumbled coastlines and successions of migrating birds. Less predictably, this maritime province is a melting pot that never quite melted. The French Acadians you may know about, and the English—but what about the Greeks, the Gaels and the Germans? They’re all here and they’re all mad for festivals. The fishing villages are jigsaw puzzle-perfect…and absolutely authentic. Our walks range from candlelit tours of some of the oldest towns in NorthAmerica, to spectac- ular coastal footpaths and woodland trails where the native Mi’kmaq (or Micmac) made their home for thousands of years.Atlantic currents make Nova Scotia milder than you may have realized and its northern latitudes make for extra-long summer days perfect for enjoying it all.
ITINERARY
Our group meets in Halifax, one of Canada’s first English settlements, for a get-acquainted walk from the harbor to the citadel. Later, we’re welcomed to the Victorian village of Wolfville (1 night) with a festive dinner in our beautiful inn, a former 19th century sea captain’s mansion.
Halifax Yarmouth
Next day it’s on to Halls Harbour with its awesome tides…a lobster boil overlooking the Bay of Fundy…and a visit with a master printmaker and storyteller. Annapolis Royal (2 nights) is our base for a wildlife walk on remote Briar Island (known for its orchids and migratory birds) and whale watching in waters that attract humpback whales.
We’ll explore Kejimkujik National Park, the traditional home of the native Mi’kmaq tribe. Then we settle into 350-year-old Lunenburg (2 nights), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A friend takes us by lobster boat to his private island for a home-cooked lunch. And there’s time for an afternoon walk to the fishing village of Blue Rocks. On our final day, we visit famed Peggy’s Cove before returning to Halifax.
