One morning in the rain forests of Costa Rica,we spotted 22 bird species, 3 kinds of iguanas and a family of white-faced monkeys…before we finished breakfast! You can read the numbers— 9,000 plants, 208 species of mammals, 850 kinds of birds—but the statistic that matters most is that 100% of every Costa Rican day you comefaceto face with naturein stunning abun- dance. Experienced naturalists accompany us as we explore the Pacific side of the watershed. There’s a private cloud forest where you may spot a black howler monkey (if you can stop gaping at theorchids). At ArenalVolcano, thelava flows aretoo hot to touch, but thehigh altitude breezes are cool. And from our hillside lodge above the ocean,we enjoy an easy day of kayaking, and take lowland jungle trails to mangrove swamps and beaches in search of crocodiles and roseate spoonbills.Throughout,we’ll also meet ticos (Costa Ricans) and learn firsthand how this gentle, democratic country has set an ecological example for the world.

ITINERARY

After meeting in San José, an easy countryside walk leads us to five spectacular waterfalls amid vivid flurries of butterflies. The lush, cool climate is perfect for coffee-growing, and we'll wander a plantation and taste the famous local brews made from the bright red beans. Vivid greens take over as we explore a private cloud forest (1 night) that was home to the former president of Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio National Park

At Arenal Volcano we venture onto the lower slopes to see the results of recent eruptions. Flowing, bubbling red lava is the spectacular backdrop to dinner at our hotel (2 nights) across the lake. With remarkable birds like emerald toucanets and the resplendent quetzal plus thou- sands of plants, our naturalist-guided walks at this private wildlife sanctuary traverse hanging bridges. We also visit a friend's plantation for a home cooked lunch and tasting of guaro (sugar cane liquor), and drop in on the children at a local school.

Just two hours away is Carara National Park, one of the last major breeding sites of the scarlet macaw and home to white-faced monkeys and sloths. For three mornings, a chorus of squirrel and capuchin monkeys is our wake-up call at Manuel Antonio Park. On horseshoe-shaped Pacific beaches, in mangrove swamps and in primary jungle, the game and bird viewing here is unrivaled. In addition to guided walks and an easy day that offers kayaking in mangroves, there are opportunities to wander on the beach, snorkel or boogie board, or take a siesta by the pool.
