Montana—Glacier Park Glories A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE Canadian Rockies: Banff & Jasper A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE
Here is the secret most visitors to the Canadian Rockies never understand: You don’t have to go on a trek or sleep in a tent to experience the solitude of this awesome country away from the crowds. On this glorious Classic Journey, you enter into the heart of this remarkable landscape without ever giving up the creature comforts. Certainly, you’ll see the essential sights like calendar-perfect Lake Louise. But we’ll take you into whisper-quiet groves of lodgepole pines…arrange a guided walk onto the azure ice of an awe- some glacier…offer you the foamy chance to go river-rafting…and put you in view of moose, elk or bighorn sheep (minus the camera-toting motor- coach groups). When we walk,we gravitate to gentle or moderate trails. For your comfort,we’ve arranged accommodations in gracious historic lodges and feasts on local specialties. The Cree used the word “Yoho”—an expression of awe—to describe this land. When you see it our way,we know you’ll agree.
ITINERARY
We meet in Banff for a walk in a spectacular limestone canyon lined with waterfalls. Then it’s on to Lake Louise (3 nights) and our historic lodge. We’ll take a morning stroll along the shores and also visit sapphire-blue Moraine Lake, tucked into the Valley of the Ten Peaks.
Crossing the Continental Divide, we head for Takkakaw Falls, Canada’s second highest waterfall. Later, at Emerald Lake, we offer options including river raft- ing or a lakeside walk and guide-led talk about the fossil-rich Burgess Shale.
In Jasper National Park (2 nights), our historic lodge overlooks Lac Beauvert. Here, we can wander into wildlife-rich wilderness…or go canoeing, fishing or horseback riding on your own. We save time as well for a boat ride to Spirit Island and a visit to a lake with the unlikely sight of small icebergs calved from Angel Glacier. Returning to Banff, we’ll stop to explore Athabasca Glacier with our local guide.

ITINERARY
We meet in Whitefish (1 night) where a gentle walk with views of the Rockies precedes a cowboy cookout at a working ranch.
On our first morning, we walk through a beau- tifully carved gorge to turquoise Avalanche Lake. From our timbered lodge in East Glacier (2 nights), a gentle trail winds past a double waterfall and through wildflower meadows to Upper Two Medicine Lake. A local friend from the Blackfeet tribe joins us and shares the culture of his people.
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, Many Glacier (2 nights) is the ideal starting point for a series of varied walks. Wildlife sightings—elk, deer, moose, bald eagles—are common on the trails we’ve chosen (often with fine picnic spots as our goal).

A century ago, railroad barons lured travelers to “America’s Little Switzerland” with amenities like lake steamers. In that tradition, we cruise Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes. Our final day, we return to Whitefish via the Going-to-the-Sun Road, considered the most scenic road in America.
