Feast on fish fresh from the sea with tart lingonberries for dessert.Wander through the lushest wildflower meadows you’ve ever seen.Take past-your-bedtime strolls in the late-night light. We’ve scouted fine footpaths that trace the edge of the Baltic Sea,windpast stately castles and threadthrough quaint country villages. You’ll explore this cool and hospitable region in the company of native guides, expert in the distinct culture, history and traditions of each country we visit.

ITINERARY

On our introductory walk in Copenhagen (1 night), we’ll take in the sights including Christiansborg Palace, and end the day with a stroll and a lakeside dinner in Snekkersten (2 nights). After exploring Fredericksborg Castle, known as the Danish Versailles, we’ll pick up a coastal trail that winds among mansions and small villages, with dramatic views of the Øresund waters.

We cap a morning visit to the Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (Hamlet’s Elsinore) with a brief, scenic ferry ride to Sweden. At a lakeside convent, we meander through centuries-old gardens, filled with medicinal herbs used by the nuns. Then we settle into the medieval village of Ystad (1 night), home to a major artists’ colony. It’s our base for walks along the tranquil Baltic, past quaint fishing villages and to the mysterious Viking standing stones. We return to Denmark via the soaring Øresund bridge for a brief flight to Norway.

From Bergen (2 nights), we go by funicular to take in the panoramic views from Fløyen on a spectacular countryside walk. We cap the week on one of the world’s great train rides, descending almost half a mile to the shore of Sognefjord, Norway’s most awesome fjord. There, we take a never-to-be- forgotten cruise through the sliver-thin fjord.
