Turkey—TheTurquoise Coast & Cappadocia

A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE

Istanbul is our exotic, sensory-overloading introduction toTurkey. But the coast holds a special allure for us, so we also take four leisurely days to explore it on a 70-foot teakwood yacht. On board,we live in comfortable cabins with private baths.Roaming from one quiet bay to the next. Snorkeling over water-covered ruins.Walking to remarkable sites like Ephesus and Caunos.Always with the decadent option of staying “at home” for a nap or a swim in the 75-degree waters. And no visit toTurkey is truly complete until you follow the fabled Silk Road through the land of whirling dervishes into Cappadocia with its ancient under- ground cities. If you’ve been longing for one of the most memorable destinations of your life, you’ve found it!

ITINERARY

We begin in Istanbul (1 night) where our guided visits include the Blue Mosque, lunch at Topkapi Palace, and the Hagia Sophia, one of the archi- tectural wonders of the world. After a short plane ride to Dalaman, we settle into our teakwood yacht to cruise the Mediterranean coastline (4 nights).

Staying close to shore on calm waters provides us unparalleled access to people and places that are almost impossible to reach by land. We’ll thread our way through beautiful islands, anchor in remote bays, and snorkel in a cobalt blue lagoon. One day, we meander up a reed-filled estuary to spot endangered sea turtles and visit Caunos to see its Ottoman fortress. We’ll also end a coastal walk at a natural harbor with ruins of sunken Roman baths.

Back ashore, we explore the world’s finest classical ruins at Ephesus (above, inset photo), and overnight in Kusadasi (1 night) on the cliffs above the sea. From Izmir, a flight leads to Cappadocia (2 nights), where we relax over lunch with a village family. Walks lead us through vineyards, along ancient caravan routes, and to a nearly unimaginable underground city dating to the 7th century. After visiting a potter-friend in Avanos, we return to Istanbul.

Montenegro—AdriaticTreasure A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE

How will you explain Montenegro to your friends who haven’t been (and that will be 99.9% of them)? Do you start with its balmy Adriatic coast, where golden stone villages nestle on secluded, palm-lined bays? You can’t leave out the wild mountains with their sheer canyons and whisper-quiet lakes. You’ll certainly have stories about the hospitable Montenegrins…the olive growers, grappa-makers, shepherds and artists our local guide intro- duces to you.We think you’ll fall in instant love with this compact Balkan land like we did because it’s still so undiscovered, unexpected and unforget- table. In one easy-going week,we’ll take in UNESCOWorld Heritage sites, four scenic national parks, chic seaside resorts, and pre-Medieval landmarks. And you’ll come home with the satisfying sense of having fully experienced the culture of a country that most travelers can’t even find on a map.

ITINERARY

We meet in the modern capital of Podgorica. After a brief walk, we visit Morača Monastery with its 13th Century frescoes. En route to the mountain village of Kolašin (2 nights) we’ll stop to wander in a private botanical

garden. We’ll drive through the awesome Tara River Canyon—Europe’s deepest—and walk the shores of glacial Black Lake. At the end of a mountaintop path, a family of shepherds welcomes us to lunch at their huts.

Then we descend to Budva (2 nights) on the lush Adriatic coast. We’ll explore a trail through a valley of ancient mills. By private launch, we’ll glide over the teeming waters of Lake Skadar and take in perfect views of leg- endary Sveti Stefan (above). And you’ll meet our friend Boris and learn how he preserves the classic art of mosaics.

Under a jumble of red-tile roofs, lovely Kotor (2 nights) sits on a fjord-like arm of the Adriatic. From our hotel, we wander (and shop) its narrow medieval streets and cruise out to a tiny island. A walk through olive groves with views of the sea leads us to Ilija’s farmhouse for an olive oil tasting. Our farewell dinner is at one of the country’s best restaurants.
