Prague to Budapest A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE You’re so quadri-lingual

Three new languages in one week? No problem. Besides fluent English, our guides are native speakers of Czech,

German (in Austria) and Hungarian. So you’re in full, friendly contact

with the locals, instead of standing on the side-

lines. The guides happily use their connections to talk you into one-of-a- kind experiences that most tourists miss.

v 18

If you’ve ever wondered how it would be to time-travel, this compact visit to the Czech Republic,Austria and Hungary is for you. Powder-blue cathedrals leap up from the heart of valley towns. Incredibly intact villages are so perfectly preserved that the U.N. recognizes them asWorld Heritage Sites. Strolling through wide open farmland, you’ll be forgiven if you feel you’ve stepped back into feudal times. Of course, the gems of this journey are Prague and Budapest, one-time capitals of the Habsburg Empire whose spires and castles create the conti- nent’s most inspiring skylines.Whether you’re sipping wine from the terraced vineyards along the Danube valley or hitching a ride on a friendly farmer’s tractor, you’ll marvel that these places still exist. And you’ll bring home with you a rich slice of Europe’s life and history that most travelers never see.

ITINERARY

We meet in imperial Prague (1 night), and spend an afternoon discovering its magnificent Old Town. The next morning, we marvel at local glassblowers as they ply their craft. We’ll explore the remarkably preserved villages of Telc and Cesky Krumlov (2 nights) and ramble through rolling grasslands to Rozmberk Castle.

Following old trade routes we enter Austria’s lush Wachau region. Through fields of flax, we walk to a paper mill and the serene monastery of Zwettl. The castle where Richard the Lionhearted was held hostage during the Crusades towers over Durnstein (2 nights). Of course we explore the ruins. After a farmhouse lunch, we cruise the beautiful Danube.

Passing through fertile farmland, we enter Hungary en route to Budapest (2 nights). Our first afternoon, there’s time for a leisurely promenade along the Danube. In a fascinating daylong exploration, we ramble from the Royal Palace in Buda to Europe’s largest synagogue and a district overflowing with cafes and musicians in Pest.
