A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE Peru & Machu Picchu A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE
Machu Picchu is actually in a jungle. If you take the IncaTrail to the lost city, you approach from above. And the stupendous blocks of stone in its walls are so finely carved that you could barely slip a piece of paper between them. Believe us,Machu Picchu retains the ability to startle and inspire you no matter how many years you’ve thought about visiting. You will get the shivers the first time you see it.On this unforgettable journey, you’ll spend all or part of three days at the site (unlike the brief in-and-out visits many tours make). Plus we give you leisurely exposure to the rest of Peru’s conquistador-tinged history, indestructible Inca architecture and spectacular geography. We’re in the Andes, so there are some up-and-down trails, but we also offer frequent, easier walking options. And our guide is a native Quechua who’ll make you as com- fortable in Cusco as you’ll be among mountain villagers and llama herders.
ITINERARY
At 10,900 feet above sea level, the air of Cusco (1 night) is thin. We don’t mind—it allows us a reason to relax in our five-star hotel, a restored 16th century monastery. Acclimated, we start the next day with a walk through the Peruvian countryside to Sacsayhuaman, a stunning Inca site.
Leaving Cusco’s local market, we drive to the spectacular Urubamba Valley and enjoy a traditional lunch at a gracious hacienda. From our inn in the foothills (3 nights), we visit a remote Andean village...learn about ancient ceramic and weaving tech- niques...wander among long-necked, shaggy-coated llamas and
alpacas...and visit a remote village school.
Our base for exploring Machu Picchu is Aguas Calientes (2 nights). We approach the legendary ruin by train and bus. (Or skip the train and climb a stretch of the Inca Trail for a jaw-dropping entrance to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.) With two leisurely days here, you can see the site on your own as well as with our guide…and take an orchid or birdwatching walk at our luxurious hotel before we return to Cusco.

Patagonia is a glorious paradise. Great escarpments of glacial ice slice into super-chilled mountain lakes. One day, you’re walking in a high forest carpeted with yellow and orange wildflowers. The next, you’re in a sun- drenched vineyard up against a deep blue backdrop of Andes. Condors soar overhead. Ears up, guanacos graze near your paths. And you’ll realize again how big the outdoors really can feel—whether you’re picnicking on a volcanic slope, lacing on crampons for a glacier walk, or gliding past ice- bergs to a stunningly remote sheep ranch. Every step of the way, you’ll be in the company of local guides as well as naturalists and other experts. And we love to show you every wonder in special Classic Journeys’ fashion—with unique events like a personal welcome at a premiere vineyard, traditional Argentine barbecues, and truly distinctive lodgings. We know of no better place to absorb the grand sweep of nature.
ITINERARY
We meet in Buenos Aires (2 nights) for a guided walk of the lively city. Heading into the country, we’ll spend a day on a private cattle ranch and meet the gauchos.
A short flight takes us to El Calafate (3 nights), the gateway to the glacier district. Our bou- tique hotel overlooks Lake Argentina and is an easy stroll to a bird reserve that teems with flamingo and black-necked swans. The next morning we approach Perito Moreno Glacier by water and explore its surface in the company of our experienced local guide. We’ll picnic on a nearby slope, close enough that we might even hear the cracking of the ancient ice. Another lake cruise among freshly calved icebergs takes us to a working estancia (ranch) in a remote Andean valley.

In the morning, we head north by air to Mendoza (3 nights) and the “Route of the Wines.” Here in the heart of Argentina’s fine wine region, we’ll have a chance to tour the vineyards with a local agronomist for tastings of fine Cabernets and Malbecs. We’ll also take a gentle walk streamside to El Salto in the foothills of the Andes. On our final day, we fly back to Buenos Aires where we part company.
