Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast FAMILY JOURNEY

For adults traveling with children, coastal Croatia is just about perfect. Life is so laid- back here. Let the kids hunt sea glass on the edge of the placid Adriatic while you sip something cold on the overlooking terrace. The people are as warm and wel- comingas the nearby Italians with whom they share lots of culture (and cuisine). We’ll go sea kayaking and river rafting and ferry boating. For the adults, there’s truly spectacular walking and wine-tasting in our friends’ vineyard. On any given day, you’ll all be immersed in history, quaint rural life and medieval cities to spark the imagi- nation. Altogether, it’s a low-stress, highly enjoyable land right at the top of many travelers’must-see lists. If we were ever to pack up our family and move to any destination we tour, this would be the one! Join us and see why.

THE KIDS WILL LOVE…

• Sea kayaking on crystal-clear waters • Playing “capture the flag” while the adults go wine-tasting

• Exploring the city walls of Dubrovnik

ITINERARY We meet in Dubrovnik (2 nights) for a warm-up walk on the city walls (and a stop at our guide’s favorite gelato shop).

In two-person sea kayaks, we go for an easy paddle to a peacock-populated island with an abandoned fortress, inland lake and perfect picnic spots. A short countryside drive is punc- tuated by a stop at a monastery and a winery lunch before reaching our luxurious seaside resort (2 nights). On the nearby Cetina River, the canyons are deep but the rapids are mel- low, and it’s a great spot for rafting.

A morning ferry ride takes us to Hvar (2 nights), one of the world’s 10 most beautiful islands. We see for ourselves as we wander in lavender fields and stop to see the huge grinding wheels of an olive press in action. You’ll have options to go snorkeling…send the kids for a bike ride…go shopping and sit down for lunch in a local friend’s agriturismo. On our last day, we ferry to Split for an explo- ration of Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace.

For the adults, there are magnificent estates and local pubs, fine dining and optional golf on spectacular links. Irish foot- paths are nothing short of amazing. We plot walks on a variety that reveal wild seashores, quiet valleys and classic villages. And every day ends at tran- quil lodgings with activities for the whole family. You’ll all have a grand time!

• Visiting a working sheep farm • Sea kayaking on Kenmare Bay • A cart ride through the Gap of Dunloe

ITINERARY

We meet in Killarney (2 nights) for a fine start that includes a chance to clamber on the walls of a 15th century castle and a dip in the pool before dinner. During our time here, we’ll hear the local tales as we cruise the waters of Killarney Lakes and get in a lunch at Lord Brandon’s cottage in the mountains known as McGillycuddy’s Reeks.

Nearby, our friends herd a thousand mountain sheep…and they’ll show us how it’s done. One afternoon, the kids throw pots with a local artisan while the adults wander and shop in lovely Kenmare (4 nights). There are waterfalls, estates, peat farms and ancient stone circles for exploring. (And if you like, you can sneak away for an optional afternoon of golf on acclaimed courses.)

Of course, we’ll visit the Ring of Kerry, then offer the options of a beachside walk…a guided visit to stately Derrynane House…or a bit of fishing with our guides. Our final day, we visit the woolen market before parting in Killarney.
