Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE

Half the people we know have cruised to Alaska. The other half plans to. But as much as we love a cruise, it just seems a shame to float right past some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. After all, the Kenai Peninsula offers a

range of wonderful walking options that don’t require “bush” skills. There’s the world’s most northerly rain forest…Exit Glacier where a scenic path allows us to experience its awesome scale up close…Resurrection Bay with its humpback whales and orcas…the wildflower meadows too far from shore to ever be spotted by a landing party. With Classic Journeys, you’ll see it all—andyou’ll meet local fishermen, naturalists and other friends.Accommodations include historic lodges and hotels. Even if we don’t offer a 2 a.m. dessert buffet,we think you’ll take home equally happy memories of a lakeside salmon-bake followed by fresh-picked blueberries. And then you’ll know you’ve truly touchedAlaska.

ITINERARY

We gather in Anchorage for a warm-up coastal walk with views of three mountain ranges and Byron Glacier.

After a spectacular drive to Mt. Alyeska (1 night), we take a forest walk past a series of waterfalls and the state’s richest gold mine. Our hotel in Seward (2 nights) is the perfect starting point for a fascinating glacier walk. We’ll enjoy a special guided behind-the-scenes tour of Alaska’s SeaLife Center and take a breathtaking boat trip into the Kenai Fjords.

We’ll watch for moose, bear and caribou in Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, where you have the option of a gentle river-rafting excursion or a riverside walk. Then we’ll settle into our lodge in Homer (2 nights) in time to watch the halibut fishermen unload their catch.

After breakfast, we water taxi to a foot- path on the fringes of Alaskan wilder- ness before a seafood feast at one of our favorite local restaurants. Our final day, you can visit local galleries and shops before parting company in Homer.

Bryce,Grand Canyon & Zion A CULTURAL WALKING ADVENTURE

Even as adults we play the “pioneer game” every time we visit this monu- mental trio of national parks. It goes like this:Imagine cresting the hill in your Conestoga wagon to beholdthese sights. How would you have reactedto canyons so deep, rock this red, bridges of stone and boulders poised on slender spires? These days, many visitors miss that sense of wonder as they RV past major points of interest. The Classic Journeys’ approach is different. We partner you with our knowledgeable guides who interpret what you see. (Did you know, for example, that the original GrandCanyon may have been created cataclysmically by the sudden draining of an inland sea?)We’ll make sure you get to less visited areas andexperience the richness of the area’s geologic and human history.Yet we do it all without undue exertion. We’ve found easy trails—not to mention historic lodges—to make certain that this journey of discovery is memorable in every way.

ITINERARY

We meet in St. George, Utah, and enter the first of the scenic canyons in our dramatic week together. We'll walk among bristlecone pines to a picnic with views of 1,000-foot sandstone cliffs. Then it’s on to Bryce Canyon National Park (2 nights) and dinner in the restored 1920s lodge. Bryce is a natural gallery of red rock wonders. We’ll journey into the heart of the canyon, as our guide leads us through ancient stone fins, spires, arches and mazes.
