If you’re like us, you think of travel as more than “going places.”When you strike out, it’s because you crave experience and discovery, not just monuments and museums. You want to understand what’s behind the touristic façade that most people never penetrate. You travel because for at least a few days every year you want to step outside of your
life...and that’s what our signature Cultural Walking Adventures are all about.
You’ll wake up to adventure.
Even the sunlight is different…filtered through a rainfor- est canopy or streaming through the shutters of a Tuscan villa. After a breakfast in the local style, a typical Classic Journeys day begins with a walk in the company of your guide, usually a couple of easy hours on well-marked trails or through the medieval lanes of a nearby village.
Our friends are your friends.
Our guides live in the regions we visit, and they aren’t shy about networking. Classic Journeys takes special pride in introducing you. By lunchtime, you may well have met a naturalist or an art historian or a shepherd. If we’re in a village, the guide will steer you to a favorite trattoria or pub. If we’re in the countryside, there’s always a chance we’ll stop by a farmhouse or winery for a homemade meal.
Life takes on a slower pace.
By afternoon, you’re glad somebody else has a plan because it’s just so nice to go with the flow. A wine- tasting? Excellent. A little snorkeling on the reef? Fine by me. A stroll in a Rocky Mountain wildflower meadow? Swell. We generally pace itineraries so this part of the day offers some contrast to the morning. Often, we scout another walk. It’s also a time when we frequently offer the option of shopping on your own or relaxing by a pool.
The end of the day is its own reward.
Whether it’s sunset in the Sahara or the purple evening shadows on Lake Como, every Classic Journeys day ends in style. We’ll treat you to a fantastic dinner of the local specialties. A hotelier or chef often joins us for a toast. We heartily encourage you to wallow in the all-out pleasure of reliving the day—and anticipating tomorrow.
Every day is filled with authentic experiences as paths take us into local villages, markets, workshops and countryscapes that most tourists never see. Can’t you see yourself on a quiet stroll in a Cotswolds village (page 22)?
