EssentialNews INNOVATION CHALLENGE JOINS LUNCH!

The organisers of food to go event lunch! have announced the launch of the Innovation Challenge 2010, a new awards scheme designed to promote and celebrate genuinely new ideas in the sector, including new innovations and a 'new take' on established concepts which provide a real point of difference and commercial competitive advantage.

JUST FOR FUN...OR IS IT?

Whatever next? Le Whif, hailed as the world's first "breathable food", allows consumers to breathe in chocolate or coffee through their mouths from a lipstick- style tube inhaler. Le Whif Chocolate delivers the taste of chocolate with less than one calorie, and Le Whif Coffee provides a caffeine dose equivalent to a small shot of espresso, we're told. Le Whif contains microscopic chocolate or coffee particles that are small enough to become airborne, though too large to enter the lungs. Each Le Whif is fully biodegradable, and allows for eight to 10 puffs. Suggested retail price is £1.99 for a single pack. A novel impulse purchase to site beside the till perhaps...? GOING DOTTY!

May we just say good luck to the multi-award winning Byron Bay Cookie Company, which has been nominated in the 'Best VegSoc Approved Sweet Treat' category for the second year running at the 2010 Vegetarian Society Awards. Last year saw Byron Bay's Triple Choc Fudge Cookie win the award for 'Best VegSoc Approved Snack/Confectionery' and this year's hopes rest on the 'Dotty' Cookie. Our tasters in the office have definitely given it the thumbs-up (thanks for the samples, Beyond the Bean-ers!) so we await the results from the gala awards evening on October 28 with bated breath...

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

On July 16 and 17, an adventurous batch of 14 Bakehouse employees took to the hills as they tackled the famous Three Peaks Challenge in an attempt to raise money for the company's nominated charity, The Berkshire County Blind Society.

The successful Bakehouse Three Peaks Team

has almost reached its target of £10,000 for charity

The Bakehouse Three Peaks Team - composed of employees from throughout the company including the managing director - set out to scale some of Britain's highest peaks in under 24 hours. The daunting challenge included over 3,353 metres of climbing

and in excess of 26 miles of walking, not to mention 500 miles of driving between the peaks and the team faced tempestuous wet and windy weather conditions. David Plummer, team co- ordinator and national account manager at Bakehouse, said: "We were all exhausted but are still buzzing from having managed to complete the challenge!"
