Sue and Jim came up with the idea for Meat Roll while running a deli


When serial entrepreneur Jim Rawcliffe was forced to look for a new venture following the demise of his property business due to the collapse of the housing market in 2008 he revisited an idea he and wife Sue first had some years back, for a coffee shop with a difference


Previous jobs for Jim had included surveyor, mortgage broker and song writer, but it was as a deli owner that he and Sue had initially conceived the idea for their current business. The concept was to offer quality meat filled rolls served from hot counters, all freshly made and cut to order, complemented by a great quality coffee menu. The aim was to start with one shop but develop a scalable business that had the potential to become a national chain. The new venture was to be called 'Meat Roll' and a great deal of work went into the branding and overall look of the business even before a property had been found.


As a start-up business Meat Roll seems to have had


more than its fair share of setbacks and challenges, but the outlet is now up and running - with more than a little help from one company in particular. In fact, rather than

THE EARLY DAYS


It took over a year to find the current location, which is in Kingston, but when Jim initially saw the property he didn't think that it was right for his business due to the location. However, the property had a short lease and the rent was cheap so Jim did some research and discovered that far from being unsuitable the area where the property was located actually had a footfall of 180,000 per year making it a great choice for his business. When Jim found it the property - previously a café - had been empty for three years. It took over six months to finalise the lease with Jim finally taking ownership in March 2009 - however he had to grind the doors open to gain
