QUESTION TIME

Cooper's Coffee's special Bean

(coffee) to Cup (bra) blend has been created to support the

Breast Cancer Campaign

Jacqui Cooper, operations director at Cooper's Coffee, knows how to get the better of slugs and believes a little of what you fancy does you good

Q. What's your favourite hot beverage? A. That would be a Macchiato, preferably consumed sat outside a street café on a sunny winter's day, but it's usually at my breakfast bar in the kitchen at home!

Q. And cold? A. Sorry, but this one is caffeine-free - Bombay Sapphire Gin, soda water, plenty of ice and a slice of lime, watching a Guatemalan sun set. Ok, just give me the drink and I'll use my imagination.

Q. Do you have a favourite blend/single origin coffee? A. I used to be a huge fan of illy espresso but I am very loyal to our brand and choose our Louie Mio espresso over everything. It's our best-seller. Named after our eldest son Louie, it is a complex blend of five coffees from four continents. Lots of body and great length.

Q. What do you like to do at lunchtime? A. If I am office based, I take our dog Pippa into the office with me for the day. This means I go out for a walk at lunch time on

Jacqui Cooper is the co-founder and operations director of Cooper's Coffee, one of the UK's leading coffee distributors. Jacqui and her husband David started the company in 1989, launching the business from David's flat in Leeds. It took off and in the first year made £133,000 worth of sales. Today, 21 years later, Cooper's has coffee and equipment sales in excess of £2.3m and employs 16 members of staff.

Jacqui's background of customer service and management training (she started her career at Marks & Spencer) allowed her to create the ideal role for herself within Cooper's as operations director. According to Jacqui, a career in coffee has given her many diverse opportunities and experiences. "The industry is full of innovative, interesting characters and I am constantly meeting new people who inspire me. I've also had the opportunity to travel to places I'd never dreamed of, such as Ethiopia on a coffee plantation visit."

Jacqui's next challenge is to take part in a five-day-long trek through the Cuban countryside in October to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign. You can support her efforts by buying her special Bean to Cup coffee blend or donating online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JacquelineCooper

the surrounding fields. It's fantastic for clearing my head and re- focusing. I've made some of my most important decisions whilst walking with Pippa.

Q. What's your ideal sandwich?

A. Definitely a chicken club sandwich, white toasted bread with lots of mayo. Obviously treat stuff, the best one I have ever had is from a café in Lytham St. Annes.

Q. What's your guilty snacking treat? A. Chocolate, of course. Although for me, 'guilty' and 'treat' should not be in the same sentence. A little bit of what you fancy does you the world of good!

Q. What's your favourite café/coffee shop and why? A. Leoni's in Malton. The coffee standards are excellent, served with passion and enthusiasm every time.

Q. Describe (but don't name) the worst café/coffee shop you've ever been to. What happened? A. Too many to mention, it's so frustrating that the standards of coffee production can be so inconsistent and, as we all know in the industry, the difference between a poor cup and a great one can be as little as 2p in cost terms.

Q. Do you go for an ethical beverage if given the choice? A. Not at all. I do believe that the various certifications that we endorse at Cooper's all have a positive influence on the farmers and growers but just because a coffee does not possess such a license, does not make it unethical or indeed poorer in quality.

Q. Please give us an interesting fact about coffee... A. From an environmental perspective, a lot of people don't realise that used coffee grounds are an ideal slug deterrent. Why not bag them up and sell them at 50p per kilo? The gardeners will love it!

Q. Where will you be hanging out this weekend? A. Friday night I'll be out with the ladies, on Saturday I will be doing my bit in the community and taking my elderly neighbour into our local village, for coffee and cake. On Sunday I'll don my walking boots and go for a 10 mile walk, part of my training for the charity trek I'm doing in Cuba in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign.
