UPDATE — AUTUMN 2010 A summer of fun blazes the path to an extraordinary fall…
Dear Residents, The summer days may be getting shorter, but the fun is still going strong at the Downers Grove Park District! It’s been an exciting summer with almost 1,500 camp participants in 46 different programs at the Lincoln Center, Golf Course, Museum, Recreation Center and Interpretive Center. While campers and their families make plans for the start of the new school year, the staff at the Downer Grove Park District has been busy gearing up for an action-packed fall with dozens new programs and events. New programs include several nature programs at Lyman Woods like Fall Bird Walks, Coyote
Club, Trim the Trees, Nature Tales, Shutterbugs Nature Photography, Campfire Cooking and Wild Day Off. The Park District has also introduced the new Downers Grove Academy of Dance which will be hosted at the Lincoln Center. Most dance classes will now include a recital at the end of each class session to showcase all of our budding stars. In addition, the Park District has added an intramural program for 7th and 8th grade students including soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, kick ball and flag football. We even have a newpreschool yoga class for ages 3 to 5 years old hosted at the Recreation Center
and also at Lincoln Center. In fact, if you are a parent of a 2 ½ to 5 year-old and still looking for a preschool, the Lincoln Learning Center Preschool Programstill has some openings for the 2010-2011 school year. The curriculum includes several enrichment programs such as outdoor education at Lyman Woods, creative clay art program, health and safety education with community helpers, music interpretation and the Ready, Set, Kindergarten supplemental learning program. While tots are developing their creative skills, parents can participate in enrichment programs on child development and at-home learning opportunities such as speech and language development and math for early learners. Looking for some local fun on the weekends? Visit over 100 vendors at the Flea Market on
September 11th to pick up just the thing you’ve been looking at a great price. Take a walk on the wild side and enjoy the outdoors with the entire family at the new Great Outdoor Adventure Day at Lyman Woods on September 18th. Unplug from the TV and video games and enjoy bird watching, bug hunting and sitting around the campfire on a cool September evening. Fall also marks the return of our popular historic Trolley Tours and our Victorian Halloween event at the Museum in October. So make the most of the waning days of summer and get ready to experience an extraordinary
fall season at the Downers Grove Park District. No matter what your interests, we’ve got it right here in your own backyard.
Sincerely, Bob Gelwicks, Park Board President
