are you ready for the content revolution?

Welcome to the 21st century, where every business is a content company.

So why is the iPad an important step in a content revolution? Because it is a massive leap forward in a process of change affecting how users receive, view and interact with online content.

Until recently, users mostly viewed web content via a relatively large computer screen, and interacted with it using a mouse and physical keyboard. But now, mobile devices are fast becoming the method of choice for interacting with Internet content. These changes, however, bring a lot of considerations for the producers of web content.

To figure out what kind of changes we are talking about, let’s take inventory of the mobile devices we use – or will be using soon. There’s the fast-growing “smart” phone category such as Blackberries and iPhones. The ultra-portable PC net books are gaining in popularity. A wide variety of e-readers like the Kindle, and now the Nook is also competing for the eyes of book lovers. And then of course, there is the iPad.

All of these devices deliver content very differently than a web browser on the desktop or large laptop computers we are used to. Their screen sizes are smaller. They may lack a physical keyboard, or if they have one, they are very tiny. Some devices rely on touch screens for their major interface. E-readers deliver their content in black & white. Apple refuses to allow the use of Adobe’s Flash, a major element in many websites’ designs, on its mobile devices.

Smart content providers will consider all of this, and more, in their content’s design. Simple web design that displays well on a variety of devices should be a goal. Specific points to consider:

Size & number of elements: A design that is complex and cluttered on a large screen will become downright unreadable when squeezed onto a small mobile screen. Simple is more scalable.
