mover & shaker - memories of time

Once I got the scrapbooking bug, I wanted everything.

Memories of Time, is tucked into the small coastal town of Coos Bay, Oregon. I would

travel two hours to the valley for my supplies, as Coos Bay was a small coastal town in Oregon, and the only scrapbooking supplies were found at Wal-Mart or Joann’s. While in the valley, I would shop at every scrapbooking store only to return home and not have the right supplies to finish the project or the page that I was working on. After several years of making those long commutes, I decided to open Memories of Time.

I soon learned that a retail store was nothing like the business world I was accustomed to. There were issues like product rotation, plan-o-grams, stocking levels, inventory control, and shrinkage that I never had to deal with previously.

Most of my friends discouraged me from opening a specialty store, as they felt it would never survive in our area. However, everything seemed to fall into place upon completing my business plan. Now, after 10 years of business, Memories of Time has grown from 800 square feet to over 2500 square feet.

My goal when starting out: to have the largest paper selection on the Oregon Coast. I achieved this goal within the first few years of business. I loved scrapbooking, and determined I was not going to branch out into the whole, stamping frenzy, that was going on. That commitment was strong, right up until the time I attended my first Craft and Hobby Association Tradeshow. There, the venders put a stamp in my hand, and the rest is history.
