Creative energy will flower, as your customers discover new ideas, new thoughts, and new ways of seeing the world: all this will be reflected beautifully in their finished pages. Beautiful pages lead to repeat customers. The more fun people have in your store, the more likely they are to return for the next crop, class, or event.

Developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, traditional Zentangle (zentangle.com) includes a ritual to help get in touch with life. Tangles are used as learning skills for school children, as stress reduction for adults, and they also help develop focus and dexterity. In addition, Tangles make wonderful personalized embellishments for scrapbook pages.

History of Zentangle

My enthusiasm kicked in when I attended a workshop taught by the originators. Maria, a calligraphy artist, and Rick, a former monk, shared wonderful stories, ideas, and information at the seminar. Many shops have formed Zentangle Clubs.

With hundreds of patterns available, thi s relaxing process can be addictive. Club members learn eight to twelve new Tangles each meeting. Enthusiastic members share ideas, show personalized creations, and participate in swaps.

Three easy-to-follow books (d-originals. com) will help you get started in your store:

Books for Zentangle

Zentangle Basics and Zentangle 2, by Suzanne McNeill (blog. suzannemcneill.com),both feature step-by-step illustrations for 25 tangles, and ideas for pages, journals, cards and more.

Totally Tangled, by Sandy Steen Bartholomew (beezinkstudio.com), features over 100 tangles and totally creative ideas. Visit the blogs for news, events and a “Zentangle of the week”.

Zentangle might just be the calm that allows you to weather the uncertain economic changes besetting our industry.
