Opel reports 4th quarter review

Photovoltaic cell producer Opel has revealed its fourth quarter review.

Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) panel developer Opel Solar has announced its fourth quarter review for 2009. The firm detailed a grant of additional incentive stock options for its directors, employees and key consultants at an aggregate of 1.344 million shares - representing 2.19 per cent of the outstanding voting shares of the company.

In addition, the business reported increased order bookings for high-CPV units and tracker systems, with the firm’s balance sheet remaining in a strong position and at a level with no debt. Michael McCoy, Opel’s chief financial officer, commented: “With our new relationships and increased opportunities in the marketplace, we are poised to expand prospective installation requests in 2010.”

The company’s products are based on research carried out by themselves in cooperation with teams from the University of Connecticut and the National Research Council.

It claims its goal is to deliver clean, scalable solar power generating systems that will be cost competitive against traditional fossil fuel.

AccuStrata awarded $70k research grant

Solar cell manufacturer AccuStrata has received a $70,000 grant. Photovoltaic technology developer AccuStrata has been awarded a grant to further its research into real- time optical control systems for solar cells.

The firm was awarded a $70,000 (£46,824) phase-one Small Business Innovation Research grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency and will use the funds to field test its new panel technology. In general, the money will help the company make “on-the-fly” improvements to its solar cells as they undergo vigorous testing to ensure optimal efficiency and reliability.

George Atanasoff, president of AccuStrata, commented: “Our pilot tests in real production environments have shown that solar cells manufactured with our system should be able to produce 15 to 20 per cent more power, resulting in increased revenue and profit for manufacturers.”

AccuStrata is part of the University of Maryland’s Technology Advancement Programme and specialises in the development of optical metrology, thin films, fibre optics and semiconductors.

In the past, the organisation has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy.
