Growth amid change

T

he first quarter of 2010 has already seen a fair amount of drama with financial surprises, CEO walkouts, changes in feed in tariffs in Europe and a regional change in manufacturing and consumer behaviour towards South East Asia. Most of these changes were expected but not necessarily as quick as it has been. These changes are not a herald of disappointing times but of an industry maturing as much due to external forces as it is to the industry itself.

Rumours have been around since the middle of last year that Germany would reduce its feed in tariffs in 2010. The announcements have occurred and by mid year the impact of the announcements will be felt. France has also changed the way it provides tariffs for the region. The main reason for these countries to make these changes has been due to the dramatic amount of applicants for solar projects once the tariffs were announced. So many that the respective governments envisaged a massive over supply and chose to head this off.

South East Asia took the mantle of most manufacturing and consuming of solar products slightly earlier than anticipated. Rumours are that China is about to introduce FiTs to the region which will create another explosion of activity. Like the European markets this activity will be too great and will most likely be followed by contraction and consolidation as we are seeing in the European markets.

Despite the recession and industry changes, the global market not only remains strong but is expected to grow on a fairly continual slope for the next few years. The companies who are responding to the global market are the ones that are continuing to do better. These companies that had a large percentage of their business tied to a singular market, especially where FiTs were in play are finding the going very difficult and act as a warning to any company in the industry.
