BEWARE DYNAMIC PRICING Walmart became the latest retailer to
use electronic shelf labels, which allow employees to change the price of an item every 10 seconds, depending on the time of day or demand. For example, if there’s a heatwave, the price of water, ice cream, ice, and coolers can all be raised on a dime. Similarly, if a storm is coming, candles, comfort food, and batteries can surge in price. On the flip side, when items are close to their expiration date or out of season, stores can quickly discount them. Use price comparison apps like Honey, PriceSpy, or ShopSavvy and store loyalty programs to get the best prices. Check store receipts to ensure the prices you saw on the shelf match what you paid at checkout.
OVERTIME PAY Phase one of a new Department of Labor (DOL) rule went into effect this summer, allowing about 1 million salaried workers to be eligible for overtime pay. The change allows more salaried employees to be paid overtime (one-and- a-half times pay) when they work more than a 40-hour week.

is pushing a pricey repair for an older vehicle with a low overall resale value? An honest mechanic will always weigh the price of the repairs versus the age and current value of your vehicle.
GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING
A good mechanic won’t simply give you their best verbal guess on the total cost of a repair — he or she will put your quote in writing, detailing your vehicle’s ID information with an estimated completion date. Make sure you have a copy of
the quote and receipt before leaving your car with any facility.
TIPS ON TIPPING Tips are no longer just for restaurant
workers. Now, it seems every establishment you enter and service you engage in has a tip jar or swiveling iPad to thrust at you, demanding that you select a 15%, 20%, or even 25% gratuity. A Bankrate survey found that 35% of us think tipping has gone mad. How to handle it? Keep tipping food servers, drivers, and stylists the 15%-20% you always have, but don’t feel guilty about just rounding up your change, sticking a dollar in the jar, or even skipping the tip altogether at walk-up counters.
ALL WORK, NO PLAY Even when given time off, Americans
are notorious for not taking it. A new survey from Sorbet, a fintech lending firm, found that 62% of workers didn’t use all their vacation time in 2023, letting a third of it go to waste. Unused paid time off (PTO) has climbed since 2019, with over 5% of folks never using any of their time off. Worse, the equivalent cash value of the unused time off is over $3,000 per worker.
