In a Passport Pinch?

Keep your vacation plans on track with these fast renewal options. ::

lanning a trip overseas? Now is the best time of year to renew a passport that’s

approaching its expiration. Many countries require a U.S.

passport to have six months of validity remaining before they give permission to enter. Some airlines won’t even allow passengers with fewer than six months of passport validity to board flights from the U.S. Even worse: It takes six to eight

weeks for routine passport service, and two to three weeks for expedited service. And mailing times are not included in those processing times, which could add two to four more weeks into the equation. From late winter into summer,

demand for passports is generally higher than other periods of the year, making it wiser to plan ahead and apply during the slow season — now through December. But what if you’re traveling in

a few weeks and just realized your passport doesn’t have six months left? Here are four options for renewing it quickly:

1

ONLINE In June, the State Department

reintroduced a trial service for eligible U.S. citizens to renew their passports online, though it’s important to note that it’s not exactly an expedited service, as the website (travel.state.gov/content/ travel/en/passports/have-passport/ renew-online.html) says you should not be traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the date you submit your application. This is a beta version, and

you may not be able to start your application on the day of your choice. The system opens for a limited time at 12 noon ET.

2

EXPEDITED RENEWAL If you need your passport

fast, call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778 to request expedited service for an extra $60. You may also pay for upgraded one- to two-day delivery for an extra $19.53. (This is only available for passport books, not cards.)

Another option for quicker

renewal is to visit a passport agency or center (travel.state.gov/ content/travel/en/passports/get-fast/ passport-agencies.html). Passport agencies and

centers are operated by the State Department, require an
