developing bowel cancer, compared to those who only eat meat once a week or less. Processed red meats such as sausages, hot dogs, and fast food are especially problematic, they say.

OTHER DANGERS The more epidemiologists explore the potential causes of young people getting hit by cancer, the greater the number of suspects. Among the poten- tial culprits: Nanoplastics. Now omnipresent in

the modern environment, these bits of plastic — so small as to be virtually invisible — are found in tap water, bottled water, fish, and even fruits and vegetables. Researchers believe they may damage DNA and cause oxidative stress, leading to the onset of cancer.

Endocrine Disruptors. These chem-

icals that disrupt the human hor- mone system include cadmium and dioxin for cancers of the breast and thyroid, organochlorines for testicu- lar cancer, and arsenic and asbestos for prostate cancer. Fluoride. Some researchers point to

the presence of fluoride in water sup- plies as a cancer risk, although this link is considered controversial and is disputed by other studies. Some studies do suggest a possible connec- tion between osteosarcoma and high levels of fluoride exposure. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

The Market Place HEALTH

Oncologists warn that family doctors and general practitioners must now be much more vigilant when it comes to their younger patients.

This omnipresent additive in pro- cessed foods and beverages has been shown to trigger a substantial increase in intestinal tumor growth in mice. Whether HFCS itself causes cancer

is up for debate, but it clearly contrib- utes to obesity and metabolic disor- ders — a known risk factor for multiple types of cancer. “We have to look at every type of

exposure; it is not going to be one fac- tor,” Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, DVM, Ph.D., tells Newsmax. “I’m certain it will be multiple factors.” Jemal, a senior vice president at the American Cancer Society, points out that even the societal trend of delaying childbirth alters cancer risk. Studies show women who are older when they have their first child are more likely to develop breast cancer. Oncologists warn that family doc-

tors and general practitioners must now be much more vigilant when it comes to their younger patients. Assuming a patient is too young to have cancer may have fatal conse- quences due to delayed diagnosis and treatment. “If somebody shows up at age

35 with blood in their stool,” says Jemal, “I’m not sure all physicians would suspect colorectal cancer. We have to increase the awareness of the cancer risk.” He adds that only 20% of patients

in the 45 to 49 group are up to date on their recommended screenings.

LOWER YOUR RISK U

ntil the true cause of the cancer spike can be more clearly identified, the medical community’s prescriptive advice is rather generic: Eat less processed meat. Consume less ultra-processed

junk food. Avoid environmental toxins like

fire retardants, PFAS (aka “forever chemicals”), and microplastics, which now routinely show up even in the umbilical blood of newborns. Get regular exercise. Sleep eight hours a night. Avoid heavy sun exposure. Don’t smoke. Don’t drink alcohol. Eat a healthy diet: fresh fruits

and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.
