YOUR MEDICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Can I Avoid Surgery for Gallstones?

My doctor says I should consider gallbladder removal for gallstones. Is there anything different I can do? — Sally R., Topeka, Kan.

Gallstones may be caused by excessive buildup of cholesterol or other products in the gallbladder, which may lead to stone formation. There is a medication called Ursodiol that supports gallbladder health and may help dissolve the gallstones —and could help you to avoid surgery. Most importantly, eat a diet low in fat and especially fried foods, avoid processed foods, eat lean proteins and organic vegetables, and drink 2-3 liters of water daily, as this will help your gallbladder and overall health.

I’ve lost interest in sex, even Viagra doesn’t work for me. Are there supplements I can take? — Jasper P., Wilmington, N.C.

As we age, the circulating levels of testosterone decrease and can affect libido and sexual function. There is a supplement called DHEA that is a precursor to testosterone that might aid in the production of testosterone. Be cautious with any advertisements for supplements that increase testosterone and libido, as most of these are a waste of money and will not treat the root cause, which is aging and natural

decrease in testosterone production. Testosterone therapy is the most likely treatment for decreased libido and sexual dysfunction. I recommend obtaining a total and free serum testosterone level and full hormone panel with your doctor as a first step in finding the root cause of your decreased libido. Addressing the passion in your relationship may also help find the core reason for your loss of libido.

I am prediabetic and my doctor wants to prescribe me Ozempic. Will this prevent my diabetes from worsening? — Betsy B., Evansville, Ky.

Ozempic (semaglutide, a GLP-1 agonist) improves sugar metabolism and slows gastric emptying, making you feel fuller longer and decreasing your appetite. Ozempic is used for Type 2 diabetes, and even more for obesity and weight management. However, it shouldn’t replace lifestyle changes and balancing your hormones. As part of an integrated approach to wellness, Ozempic is a great tool to have in your tool box.

Is there a cure for plantar fasciitis? I’ve suffered with it for years and cannot find a permanent solution. What can I do? — Leslie Z., Fort Collins, Colo.

The most important thing you can do is to stay off your feet as much as

possible. Plantar fasciitis is usually caused by a repetitive strain injury to the ligament of the sole of the foot from excessive running, walking, or, most likely, inadequate shoe support. To relieve the pain and allow your feet to heal, ice and elevate as much as possible, use toe separators for two hours every evening, stretch your feet, and wear shoes with adequate support that take the weight off of your heels. Also try walking barefoot as much as possible.

I’m 69 and I work out twice a week at the gym and I walk 10,000 steps a few times a week, but my joints ache after exercise and climbing stairs can be painful. What should I do? — Joe B., Norwalk, Conn.

Talk to a trainer or a physical therapist to address the specific issues you are having with pain and make sure your diet is right, you get enough sleep and, very important, you stretch every day.

Which exercises are best for weight loss?

— Kenneth J., Albuquerque, N.M.

Exercising alone will not cause you to lose weight. Proper diet, sleep, and stress management are crucial to the equation. Having your hormones in balance comes into the picture as well. Exercises that will help you lose weight include walking, biking, hiking, swimming, yoga, and Pilates. Weight training is also beneficial because as you build muscle, you burn more calories while at rest.
