JOIN THE Q – AUDI’S FABULOUS Q2 AND Q7 I


n this issue we review two audacious Audi’s, the Q2 and Q7. First let’s turn our attention to the A2, Audi’s smallest SUV and proof that the most special gifts come in small packages. The Q2 is unmistakably Audi, that sloping roof, commanding ride height and iconic grille means you know which stable this pony is from. It’s compact without seeming fragile, the Audi DNA lending it as much presence as any produced by the famous marque. We climbed aboard on one incongruously hot May morning and were immediately struck by the design inside this spacious and practical crossover. Combining a coupé-like appearance with the assertive stance of a SUV, there’s comfortably room for four adults, a good-sized boot and lots of intelligent design and storage flourishes. We were lucky to have quattro all-wheel drive on the TFSI S line S tronic model we tested, with its eager, enhanced 0-62 mph acceleration of just 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 131 mph. As you would expect of an Audi SUV, both power delivery and road- holding are extremely good. You might expect it to be good in a tight spot, which it certainly is, but you’d be very surprised at how this compact car eases through the gears and cruises on open highways in a stable, stately fashion. There are some great aesthetic touches such as the 16” x 6.5J ‘5-spoke’ alloy wheels, though it’s the driving performance which is most memorable. The Progressive steering adjusts to the specific driving situation, making the Q2 agile in cornering whilst also being precise and responsive at high speeds.


Audi Q2


Now to the Q7, Audi’s flagship SUV. Again, this is a car with that striking Audi presence, and we found it to be a practical but luxurious SUV with bags of space and comfort, great seats for seven people over three rows (child seats can be fitted to six of them), making it an ideal vehicle for daily family life, business or adventures. There’s a huge 770-litre boot, which can be increased to an enormous 1,955 litres if you


electronically fold down the second row of seats. We took our Q7 northwards on the A10 to Cambridge, a road which offers a range of surfaces, gradients, twists and turns, but we wafted around Ware and thundered past Thundridge with great assurance as the 3.0 TDI quattro engine delivered 272 PS of power seemingly effortlessly. The interior of this vehicle is outstanding. Many cars boast a ‘state-of- the-art’ sound system but the one in the Q7 really is better than anything we’ve had at home! And there are other great interior features such as the Audi Smartphone Interface, MMI Navigation Plus and Audi Connect Safety and Service. This new generation Q7 is sleeker, more


curvaceous, whilst losing nothing of its original presence. This is a car which glides through the air and oozes class without making a big noise about it: more Beethoven than Beastie Boys. It has the bolder, wider grille, now a signature across the range, so it looks fabulous, but crucially for a car in this class, its lightweight structure creates a sensitive drive, powerful, responsive and without that bulky, runaway feel that some SUVs had when the concept was still being hatched in front of us. The Audi Q7 is mightily impressive, take a test-drive and discover it for yourself.
