Embracing the Virtual World
CEO, John Brennan and Head of Training and Development, Saul Gittens explore Procam Take 2’s early adoption of virtual production and provide best practice advice.
John Brennan CEO at Procam Take 2 “At Procam Take 2 we see ourselves as market disruptors and innovators. We constantly appraise technology change and realign our focus based on the immediate and future demands of our clients. It was clear to us from an early stage that virtual production was going to play an increasingly central role in content creation in film, drama, commercials, music videos and concerts. To that end we found a like-minded partner in the team at Garden Studios who shared our vision. A key component of any virtual production is understanding how the
virtual and reactive LED volume changes a cinematographer’s approach to their craft. Like any other technology change, it isn’t just the addition of new equipment and processes but virtual production calls for a changed approach to a shoot. “Our lead DoP and head of training, Saul Gittens was keen to explore
and understand this new way of working and has been shooting at the Garden Studios virtual set since late 2020. The practical knowledge and emotional understanding he has accumulated is vast and Saul regularly presents at virtual production industry events and is contributing to ScreenSkills virtual production module, while internally he has shared that knowledge across the team uniquely providing Procam Take 2 with a critical advantage when consulting on kit provision for a virtual shoot, whether at Garden Studios or any one of the growing number of virtual production studios. “There is no doubt that virtual production will play an ever-
greater role in cinematic production over the coming years. From an environmental perspective, virtual production alleviates the need for kit and crew to travel across the world. Better still, in a virtual world the action and actor can change locations multiple times in a single day’s filming greatly reducing final costs. Unlike green screen, the actor can engage with and react to the virtual world in front of their eyes. From a VFX perspective, background virtual worlds are not only recorded in camera with the foreground live action but the ambience and light the LED volumes generate naturally reflects and colours the scene reducing the need for complex work in post. As the market develops, virtual production will also enable significantly faster turnarounds from greenlight to master deliverable. “To be at the forefront of the virtual production cinematic revolution
further solidifies Procam Take 2’s position within the market as a leading supplier to the film and television industry.”
