FEELING THE SQUEEZE This desire for more high-end services costs though, and it’s not clear that budgets are able to accommodate it across the board. Molinare says that “rates will need


to increase in order to support cost increases through the industry. These increases will range from power to staff to kit costs.” And while Axis Studios says that


“ambitions and budgets have certainly increased in terrestrial TV as they compete with the better financed streaming services offering a higher aesthetic and production value” this isn’t echoed across the board. In fact, there’s evidence of a


growing two-tier system between streamers paying for high-end finishing and PSBs seeming increasingly cash strapped. Blazing Griffin says: “We are seeing more flexibility in budgets for HETV, but continued pressure from factual/entertainment. As Covid contingency funds for productions are removed, we expect to see even greater pressure.” Cheat too says it’s seeing “an


increase in the top end but a decrease in the low end. It has a positive effect from a high-end TV production perspective but means we have to be more selective in taking on lower end jobs.” As Doghouse Post says: “We are


seeing an increase” but that’s only “in some genres.” But something has to give. As


Pinewood points out: “We expect budgets to increase steadily over the next few years as demand is outstripping supply.” And, as Halo points out: “If budgets don’t rise but costs of providing the services required do, there will be problems ahead.” If demand does outstrip supply,


then “UK broadcasters’ budgets will need to increase to stand a chance of getting access to the appropriate facilities,” says Cinelab. Because otherwise, “top talent may be tempted to work on productions for streamers

IN AND OUT What seems pretty set in stone is the continuation of hybrid on prem/remote working, particularly for offline. Company 3 says “this will continue


to work on a hybrid basis, some remote and others in facilities.” And that’s because it “benefits clients and facilities alike,” says dock10. The Finish Line says that “flexible


workflows are here to stay - it’s much more cost-effective for clients. The vast majority of our clients are happy to work remotely.” There’s evidence that virtualised


workflows will become more common too. Outpost VFX says it is “something
