A BIG FINISH TO A VERY LONG YEAR As we move towards the end of the year, a big theme of our final 2021 issue is, frankly, exhaustion. The production hiatus caused by COVID lockdowns and restrictions

over the last 18 months has led to a subsequent outburst of programme making and the UK production and post sectors are running fast to keep up. In our drama genre report, producers and broadcast commissioners alike

detail how they’re living in a world full of opportunity with a tremendous thirst for higher quality content – but are struggling to satisfy demand. Our piece on live television production details, along with the various

great leaps forward in technology, the heroic efforts to keep the show on the road after one of the busiest odd numbered years in the sporting calendar ever. And as it’s the Winter issue, it’s also time for our annual landmark

report into the post market, The Facilities 50. Post production houses are energised by the opportunities coming their way as production kicks back into gear and the UK becomes the focus for so much of the streamers’ production ambitions. But they too are struggling to keep up with the demand. Because despite the good news of ever more high-quality production

work heading to these shores, there’s an elephant in the room. Probably the industry’s biggest and most pressing problem - across film, TV, commercials and post production, whatever the genre - is the lack of skilled workers to service it. The uptick in streamers’ content demands, the post lockdown production surge and that old favourite, Brexit, have combined to make this the industry’s biggest challenge. Our piece on the skills gap details how the UK is trying to meet that

challenge to find ways to supply skilled workers so the tremendous opportunity that is presenting itself right now isn’t missed. You’ll also find two separate supplements with this issue. The first is our new Televisual Factual Briefing. It focusses in on the

major broadcasters and producers of factual TV to find out what the future holds for the genre The second is The Inspiration Behind Great Television, where we

celebrate the winners of our annual Televisual Bulldog Awards and ask the creatives behind the best programmes of the recent past what it took to make such compelling content.
