unscripted and factual utilising this technology as well.” Molinare says that “working at
higher resolutions and bit depths driven by UHD and HDR will continue to put pressure on internal networks and storage solutions. Investment in core infrastructure will be a key requirement. More production with Atmos HE and HDR deliverables will continue to drive investment in these areas.” All this will mean “innovation in HDR and 4K, 6K and 8K workflows are therefore important to ensure the demand for quality content is met throughout the year,” says Technicolor. And it won’t end there. As Splice
says: “Conversations are already starting about 8K picture post.” And, as Onsight points out “although delayed, with the Olympics in Japan in 2021, 8k post will become a new technology trend.”
COMPUTER SAYS YES The promise of AI in post workflows is also front of mind for facilities with the hope that it “will improve workflows and also remove legwork enabling our talent to spend more time to produce amazing work for clients,” says GPS. No.8 also has hopes of “incorporating developing AI tools into vfx workflows reducing the need for artists to spend time on less creative tasks such as roto and clean-up.” The Mill says developing AI tools
will allow facilities to “put more emphasis on the artistry, craft and our talent. The improvements AI has had on image quality has been impressive. AI additions to our regular software packages have bolstered our output in all areas including animation, facial performance / performance capture, colour correction, rotoscoping and clean-up to name a few.” It’s a time of great change. As One
Of Us says: “It does feel like a cluster of new technologies has arrived. One lesson from the advent of AI and machine learning is that technology sometimes makes utterly unpredictable leaps forward. Which technology will have the biggest effect on the industry is very hard to call - it seems more sensible to say that we are working at a time of great change, and we need to be vigilant, flexible and smart. Easy!”
