TECHNOLOGY TRENDS FACILITIES 50

The COVID crisis has accelerated post house moves into remote working and the cloud and piqued interest in virtual production. And 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos are fast becoming standard practice

ach year in the Facilities 50 survey, we ask post houses what the big trends will be in the technology they use
over the short and medium term. This year, it wouldn’t be over
dramatic to say the pandemic has massively accelerated changes to post house technology and working practices. With a second lockdown now ongoing and possibly more to come, remote working looks like it is here to stay with most expecting it to develop further, even when the pandemic is brought under control.
HOME COMFORTS “Work-from-home will be the way forward,” says Fitzrovia Post. “Now companies have been forced to adapt and overcome these challenges and iron out the creases, it will be the new industry norm. Companies will invest in upgrading internet speeds in homes so that remote workers can quickly upload and download to company FTP.” Envy too envisages that “working
from home isn’t going to be a COVID only phenomenon. We envisage offering solutions in this area in the long-term to continue to give our clients workflow flexibility.” In fact, Envy recently announced its own platform, Envy Remote, for just this purpose. Splice says that in future, “remote

their remote working solutions in place back in February and March. Now the need is to refine those systems. As Warner Bros. De lane Lea says: “work from home and remote collaboration will keep being developed and finessed” as time goes on. GPS too says that “there were a lot of short term solutions implemented to keep functioning during lockdown. I imagine we’ll see improved solutions.” Dirty Looks says that “remote
access systems will need to improve. Streaming reliably over low bandwidth for QC will become more important, along with web conferencing systems for ‘over the shoulder’ sessions. Simple to use remote playback, including self-calibrating screens will also be important for clients to use easily and correctly whilst reviewing remotely.” Improvements and developments

in remote viewing are picked out by many. Pinewood says “the main shift we’ve seen so far, is the shift towards remote reviews across the board. We will see a major investment in this everywhere both in terms of remote review kit and the infrastructure to support it.” Rumble VFX too says
