Name: Sathya Timmaraju

Company: Varistha Limited

Job Title: Managing director

What does your company do? We develop high quality, affordable software that makes doing business online easier and more profitable. Our services include content management and ecommerce systems and bespoke database-driven application development, all with 24x7 support.

How did it all start? It all started in 2011 when I spotted an opportunity in e- commerce and the insurance sectors. I had quit my job as a lead software architect in a technology partnership to launch the company.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Our insurance quote engine software, which has generated millions of quotes for our client and increased their business from few new business applications to thousands per month. Our e- commerce software has processed over million customer orders.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Leaving a very lucrative job and investing in setting up the business, all without any prior experience in running a business. This was even more risky for me as I had only come to UK in 2000. It’s the best thing I have done.

What keeps you awake at night? Uncertainty, the next sale and the next big idea.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Wouldn’t trust people easily Wouldn’t listen to salespeople Wouldn’t take on bad customers.

What has surprised you most in your job? How difficult it is to get the attention of larger companies and convince them to partner with you. This is despite of having the track record, credibility and skills required to successfully execute the projects.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Work hard and don’t give up.

Which business do you most admire? Microsoft.

What exciting projects is your business working on? Phishing awareness software, repairs and maintenance app for letting agents and setting up office in West Africa (Ghana).

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? To expand our business in Midlands and Birmingham area.
