Schoolkids benefit from policy change

Nearly 200 disadvantaged children have been offered places at King Edward VI selective schools in Birmingham as a result of new admissions policies. The 193 disadvantaged children

who met the qualifying score in an entrance exam are to be offered places in the September intake. This is an increase of almost 30

per cent on last year. Heath Monk, executive director of

the King Edward VI Foundation said: “This reaffirms our commitment to make our selective and independent schools available to all, regardless of their background.” As part of the admissions changes, catchment areas were created for each of the six selective schools, so that more children would be able to attend if they achieved a “priority score” of 222 in the entrance test. The proposals were controversial

and attracted significant opposition and several formal objections, all of which were dismissed by the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. King Edward VI Handsworth

School for Girls was one of only six schools in the country to be awarded a grant under the DfE Selective Schools Expansion Fund (SSEF). The £2.7m grant will enable the

school to offer an additional 32 places to high-attaining girls each year, helping to redress the historic gender imbalance in selective places in the city. Amy Whittall (pictured),

headteacher of Handsworth said: “The grant will not only allow the school to increase its intake, but will also enable us to create a modern Design and Technology facility, encouraging more girls to pursue careers in, for example, engineering.”

the official introduction of Defender 90 is sure to boost interest. As the family grows to include an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain and commercial derivatives later this year, we look forward to continuing this success. “If our experience with the Defender 110 is

anything to go by, we can expect over half of customers to opt for one of the four Accessory Packs, making New Defender the most accessorised and personalised Land Rover we have ever produced.” The New Defender 90 is priced from £40,290 in

the UK and the Defender 110 is priced from £45,240. Later this year, practical commercial derivatives will join the range, priced from around £35,000 (plus VAT) in the UK.
