Business News President’s Focus

Robert Elliot has just begun his second term as president of the Solihull Chamber of Commerce. His plans for year two include adopting the EcoPledge that was spearheaded by the Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce and embraced by businesses throughout Greater Birmingham.

initiatives that benefit Solihull borough and the West Midlands as a whole, recognising issues that can affect our member organisations, and providing information and solutions to these. The highlight? I would say the awards back in October 2019 – quite simply referred to by one guest ‘a true celebration of Solihull’. My second year will be just as exciting, I am sure. There are many plans on the

I

horizon. But I have one project that is dear to my heart and nicely connected to another passion I have. I have made no secret that I want to make it possible for business to engage with

education. These activities will continue in my second year. We have just supported National Careers Week. In July we are ‘Opening Doors to Business’ which is an activity-based project working with all industry types and the Solihull Careers Hub. Part of this process is to provide an environment in which our young people can experience work based activities that will prepare them for future careers.

‘We have a responsibility to create the best opportunities in the best environments for a whole population’

The environment to prepare them? It’s vital their physical environment is in good

shape too. Last year Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce launched their Eco Pledge. Under the leadership of president Katie Hale, businesses have been making changes to their daily business routines that have direct benefits on the environment – and in many cases their costs too. At the Solihull Chamber AGM, I was proud to announce the Solihull Chamber Eco

Pledge. Continuing the great work Katie has spearheaded, and taking forward the commitment to make a difference environmentally. Member organisations will have the opportunity to make changes, celebrate these, and learn of new initiatives over the next year. Some changes will be small, others larger, but any change is good, particularly as it could reduce costs. I have always believed that when wider organisations are operating in similar

fields it is important to embrace these and work together. I am delighted that Solihull’s Eco Pledge is going to working closely with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. The council have a sustainability roadmap designed to ‘deliver a Greener Solihull’ This process has full cabinet backing and a number of activities have already been supported by Chamber members. As the year progresses there are elements of this roadmap that will involve Chamber members further. These activities could constitute the ‘one change’ we are asking people to make. Alternatively and it would be great if it was the case that these activities

were one of a number of changes made. So what now? Well communication is the key. We have over 300 members in Solihull Chamber and of course over 3,000 across the Chamber family. In the coming weeks more information will be issued regarding the Eco Pledge, the weekly newsletter will celebrate success and raise awareness. There are some key events coming up that will further promote the

pledge. #SolihullHour on Twitter will further promote good practice. I’m excited about what we can achieve together. We have a

responsibility to create the best opportunities in the best environments for a whole population. We have a responsibility to make the membership rewarding for our members. Our vision is Connect, Support, Grow. I am committed to that and proud to be president of Solihull Chamber.

am so honoured to have the opportunity as president to represent the members of Solihull Chamber of Commerce. I feel proud in what we have achieved in year one. Great events, supporting
