Cricketers’ new kit will be hit for sticks!

Never mind willow, Warwickshire’s cricketers will be playing with bamboo next season. Or rather, the players will be playing in

bamboo, because their club has agreed a deal with a supplier which makes kit out of a sustainable material derived from bamboo. The firm is ‘PlayerLayer’, and the

Warwickshire deal is a first in professional cricket. The material used contains a 50 per cent

bamboo charcoal mix with polyester, which significantly reduces the use of plastic. The material was showcased by

PlayerLayer in football last year through its partnership with Forest Green Rovers, who are well known for being one of the world’s ‘greenest’ football clubs. Ben Seifas, commercial partnerships

manager at Warwickshire CCC, said: “We have previously talked about our ambitions to be the most sustainable cricket club and venue in the country and working with PlayerLayer to create our new bamboo kits takes us a step closer to this goal.

‘PlayerLayer has been an excellent partner of the club for the last three years’

“As part of the development, several

members of our playing squad have tested the material to highlight its capabilities in a high-performance environment, with all subsequent feedback confirming that it is a very comfortable and durable material. “PlayerLayer has been an excellent

partner of the club for the last three years and we’re grateful to its team for joining forces with ourselves to be leaders in cricket by creating this new material.” PlayerLayer co-founder Roderick Bradley

said: “The Warwickshire CCC Bamboo project is extremely important to us. We believe that sport can drive change and this is a perfect example. “Warwickshire CCC have a global reach

and will show how cricket can send a message far beyond sport. This project is just the start of things to come with our partnership.” In addition to the playing shirts and

sweaters, replica shirts will be made from the same bamboo material. Warwickshire CCC has already taken

several steps in the battle against single use plastics, by ensuring that all food purchased at Edgbaston is served in compostable packaging, serving drinks in recyclable e- cups, and by installing 11 hydration stations around the stadium for water bottles to be refilled. The stadium is also powered by renewable sources.

Tales of women combating disease and adversity were told at a celebration recognising the achievements of women across Greater Birmingham and the globe. The event, in recognition of last month’s

International Women’s Day, was hosted by the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) last night at Edgbaston Stadium. International Women’s Day is a global day of

celebration, and aims to highlight women’s issues and calls for gender parity. More than 50 businesses attended the ABCC

event and heard from four speakers, who discussed a plethora of topics related to women’s health. Dee Mattoo is a Redditch-based paediatric

optometrist, and spoke about her breast cancer diagnosis and how she helps others facing cancer through the charity Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. Dee was also part of the charity's choir, which

performed for delegates at the event. Judy Dyke, director of Tyndall Woods

Solicitors, who has an extensive career in private client law and is a patron of Edward’s Trust and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, and is Cancer Research UK ambassador for Birmingham, spoke about her career and experience at the event. Ovacome boss Victoria Clare described to

delegates how the ovarian cancer support charity provides personalised assistance and information to those affected by the disease. Leyla Okhai, CEO and founder of Diverse

Minds UK, spoke about the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, and how businesses can make a change. She said: “I was honoured and delighted to be

a guest speaker at the ABCC's International Women’s Day dinner. “It was fantastic to be part of a line-up of

inspirational woman making change. I used my platform to highlight this year's theme of Each for Equal and talk about how we can all take action to create more gender equity in our worlds.” The event was sponsored by WOW Group and

NeelyThere. Qasim Majid, CEO of the firm and president of

ABCC, said: “WOW Group are proud to have been sponsors of this event for many, many years. “For me, to support this event is the right

thing to do as a business in the wake of initiatives, such as the ABCC’s Diversity in Leadership Pledge, and international campaigns such as #MeToo. “It is clear that we must take action to tackle

the lack of underrepresented groups in work and boost women in leadership positions. Businesses need and have to embrace that. “Once a business does that and really starts to

tackle this crucial issue, it makes themselves stronger and more open as organisations. “I’m really proud as ABCC president that this

event is always a huge success, and that it has evolved over the years to be a real flagship event and led to many other events and conversations about women and underrepresented groups in business.”
