A new lease of life for building

Full steam ahead: Professor Julian Beer (front) with members of GBSLEP, STEAMhouse and Bowmer + Kirkland

Work has begun on a £60m project to restore a historic Birmingham building to its former glory and house an innovation centre for artists, academics and industry to collaborate. The 121-year-old Belmont Works factory will undergo a

transformation to become the new home for Birmingham City University’s STEAMhouse initiative, which aims to drive innovation and economic growth by connecting traditional STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) with the arts. Contractors Bowmer + Kirkland are carrying out work to overhaul

the building, which includes an extension behind its façade and a full- scale reconstruction of its 27-metre high water tower. Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership

(GBSLEP) has helped fund the project through £1m of Local Growth Funding and £14m from the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, also managed by the GBSLEP. Professor Julian Beer, deputy vice-chancellor at Birmingham City

University, said: “This is the latest step in creating a real vibrant learning and creative quarter in this part of the city. This is not just about restoring an iconic part of Birmingham’s history, but is about preparing the city for its future development by creating new businesses and collaborations which will underpin growth in our region.”

App to enhance events experience

Delegates and exhibitors at future Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce events can benefit from a more interactive experience thanks to the launch of a new app. The Chamber has teamed up

with CrowdCompass to develop the app for mobiles and tablets. It is designed to enhance the

experience of attendees at events such as last month’s Spring Expo and the Big Breakfast event series. The app allows attendees to

access the event schedule and customise their agenda with personal appointments, view who else is attending and message fellow delegates, receive updates and offers through push notifications and learn more about guest speakers. Delegates who book on to an

event will receive an invitation to access the app a week before. The launch of the app follows a

successful trial at last year’s Transatlantic Conference at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Katrina Cooke, director of

marketing and events, said: “The Chamber runs a comprehensive events calendar and we’re always

An ‘appy experience: James Lloyd- Smith and Lauren Hunt from the Chamber’s marketing and events team

looking for new ways to enhance the experience for delegates, exhibitors and speakers. “We hope the app will make

some of our biggest events a lot more valuable for attendees by giving them everything they need – from schedules, networking opportunities, social media and much more – in the palm of their hands.”
