HUMECTANTS Suffering from thirsty, sun dried skin that’s flakier than a croissant? You need these. Humectants are moisture-retaining ingredients found unsurprisingly, in moisturisers. There are different types, though: man-made (for example glycerin) and natural (such as honey). And they work just as well on hair as they do on skin.
BEAUTY MYTH MAYONNAISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR
Supposed to make your hair shiny, glossy and healthy, people have been using mayo as a conditioning treatment for years – but is it a step too far? There’s nothing to suggest mayo is good for your hair, making this myth entirely false. The claim comes from the oils in this egg- based condiment, which can make hair smooth and glossy, but the thickness of the product will clog up your brush, turn your locks matted and smell horrible. Try a glossing treatment instead, and keep the mayonnaise in the fridge.

BUTEYKO - taping up your mouth and breathing through your nose
What is it? A method of breath control. Dr Buteyko, an engineer turned medic, noticed that when people were ill their breathing rates increased and they started hyperventilating. He reasoned that the reverse might apply, and that if they controlled their breathing, it might be good for their wellbeing. Borrowing techniques from yoga, he developed the Buteyko method of controlled breathing.
Doesn’t it involve having your mouth taped up? Yes, to encourage breathing through the nose, which is one of the key tenets of Buteyko. Apparently it improves sleeping, stops your mouth getting dry and helps rid bad breath.
How does it work? Adherents claim that by normalising your breathing, it counteracts asthma and other respiratory complaints and reduces coughing and wheezing. According to the NHS there is little evidence to suggest the practice will help treat asthma. Fans also say that, by combating sleep apnoea, Buteyko can help with depression, attention deficit disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Why is breathing through the nose better? They claim the air is moistened and warmed, making it easier for it to enter the lungs, regularising the intake of oxygen and the loss of carbon dioxide.
