The social side of MYBA
M
Building relationships is fundamental to building a sustainable future
YBA The Worldwide Yachting Association is an international professional organisation that is continuously growing in size and remaining tight-knit can present a challenge. The importance of nurturing a social side and its positive effect is one that MYBA has long recognised and strives to meet. The Association strongly believes that the yachting industry, like many others, is built on relationships and it works hard to create opportunities for people to form meaningful and rewarding connections.
Most of those active within the superyacht industry are aware that MYBA runs a number of specialist Committees that work for the benefit of Members, Yacht Owners, Clients and Captains alike but how many know that there is a Committee dedicated to bringing its Members and friends together? The MYBA Social Club, as it is known, is responsible for organising a series of events that range from beer tasting in Nice and high tea in Monaco to beach cleaning in Australia and a night on the town in Barcelona. Although they may differ in nature, all the social activities on MYBA’s calendar have a common purpose and that is to provide MYBA Members with the opportunity to network and connect. Nicolas Fry, who spearheads the MYBA Social Club, believes in creating even more opportunities for MYBA Members to meet in different countries as this will incorporate many cultures and make it easier for a larger number of Members to attend.
MYBA, often with the support of loyal sponsors, also organises a number of social events throughout the year. Among the most well-known are the Opening Cocktail at the annual MYBA Charter Show and the customary get together for drinks at the Monaco Yacht Show, which allow attendees to relax and mingle during what are otherwise very busy professional events. However, as MYBA is a global association, events are not restricted to the Mediterranean. MYBA hosts dinners and events whenever
and wherever the opportunity to make meaningful connections arises. After all, when Members from all around the world gather in one place, it is only natural that there is a healthy exchange of ideas, information and experiences.
Encouraging its Members and friends to lend a hand when it comes to worthy causes is yet another aspect of MYBA’s social side. Whether it is helping to clean a beautiful beach or supporting the human food chain of “Yachts du Coeur”, the satisfaction of participating in events for the good of all is the greatest reward. It creates a special bond between those who attend and adds another dimension to an existing relationship which may originally be based on business.
However, social connection doesn’t necessarily mean being physically present with people in a literal sense. It can also refer to someone’s subjective experience of feeling understood and connected to others. Finding common interests is important in today’s rapidly changing environment and social media has an important role to play in keeping us all connected. MYBA’s Instagram account page is a fine example of this. At the time of writing the account has 14,766 followers, a large percentage of which are industry players (chefs, captains, stews, sales and charter brokers, ship agents, provisioners, shipyards, yacht designers, luxury goods companies, press etc.) and this shows us that they have found common ground there. And they are not «silent» followers. An average monthly reach of 47,064, accompanied by an average monthly engagement of 3,118, means that the content shared is relevant to them and that they enjoy interacting with us. Moreover, it allows MYBA to have interesting conversations with the superyacht community and have fun at the same time. If you are not following us yet, we would be delighted if you joined the ongoing conversation at @myba_worldwideyachting
MYBA’s Facebook page is another affair. With content that is differentiated to a large extent from that of the Instagram account, it provides a communication platform whose reach is often equivalent to that of leading brokerage companies and takes another step towards making the world a smaller place.
Whatever the medium, the basic principle for MYBA is always the same. It’s all about creating and cultivating relationships.
