We’re not surprised to learn that the eponymous trench coat was in fact named after the basic clothing worn by Army Officers in the first world war. Traditionally double breasted with 10 front buttons, wide lapels, a storm flap and pockets that button close. The coat is belted at the waist and straps around the wrists. Two famous tailors claim to have invented it Thomas Burberry and Aquascutum. Burberry invented the now famous gabardine fabric in 1879. Remaining fashionable to the present day, early adopters were the likes of Bogart, Peter Sellers as Clouseau and many more Hollywood greats. The resurgence and nicely plugged Burberry adverts with models like Kate Moss have once again brought the trench coat back into favour.
