explained: “Barcolana is a trademark of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trieste, just like excellent local wines, regional cycle paths that cross the Alps and Dolomites and stretch out as far as the Adriatic Sea. Barcolana and PromoTurismoFVG aim to promote the region the world over, showing that this area is constantly on the move.”

In an effort to ‘spread their wings’ even further this year by promoting the region as a tourist and sailing destination for British sailors, the organisers of the event joined forces in a ‘twinning’ partnership with the UK’s Island SC annual Round the Island Race in June. As well as attending signing presentation at the Italian Embassy in London earlier this year, and, being present at the 2019 Round the Island Race, representatives from Barcolana are looking forward to welcoming an Island SC team to compete in the Barcolana regatta.

Mitja Gialuz commenting on the objectives behind the twinning of events said: “We want to create a Grand Slam of sailing for all those who love this sport and the seafaring culture; a circuit of sailing races with a large number of participants to bring together the traditions of various oceans and continents, to share our mutual passion for sailing and seafaring traditions, and to protect our oceans and seas.”

THE RACE

The decision by the race committee to extend the start line by two miles in 2018 is a clear indication the Barcolana is no ordinary race. Numbers this year are already on target to reach the new 2,700 limit on entries, which means the 51st Barcolana looks set to be another bumper event.

THE START

One mass start, with the line positioned between the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano Club house and Miramare Castle will see 2,700 yachts take on a course of fixed marks around the Gulf of Trieste.

This will be one of the biggest spectacles of the event not least because it will be one of the most congested areas of the race. Here teams will battle to find the most advantageous position on the start line. It also goes without saying there won’t be many places for spectator boats anywhere near the start area.

THE COURSE

The course will be positioned closer to the shore than it has been in previous years to allow spectators on the Riviera and the Carso highland to enjoy spectacular views of the race.

THE FINISH For those keen to see the finish, the finish line will be opposite Piazza Unità d’Italia, off the breakwater of Porto Vecchio. The spectators crowded along the Rive, will enjoy all the excitement and razzmatazz as the yachts head one-and-a-half miles along the final stretch to the finish line.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED? There are still plenty of options to get involved with the race this year, either with a crew place aboard a skippered charter yacht or as a VIP guest.
