OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES WANNA BE TV CHEF

He’s in the galley talking to himself again… oh hang on no he’s live streaming his dinner prep and talking to his ‘audience’. Is he wearing make-up?? Did he just gesture at you to shush? Can we not just get dinner service done? Should we tell the boss he has to wait because the chef is live with ‘his people’? Is this Hell’s Kitchen? Cos it sure as hell ain’t even Master Chef at this rate… But you daren’t upset him, that ego is as fragile as the deconstructed flower decorated cheesecake he’s just made. Which is great because we’re trying to serve STARTERS HERE buddy…….

HAKE IS NOW A THREATENED SPECIES AND IS ONE OF SPAIN’S FAVOURITE FISH TO EAT. IT’S ALSO THE MOST OVEREXPLOITED BOTTOM-DWELLING

FISH IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA, TARGETED BY THE UNSELECTIVE BOTTOM TRAWL FLEETS AND IS FISHED AT ALMOST 15 TIMES THE SUSTAINABLE RATE.

NAUTICAL ETYMOLOGY... CHOCK-A-BLOCK

A block and tackle is a pulley system used to hoist the sails. It describes what occurs when the system is raised to its fullest extent – when there is no more rope free and the blocks jam together. This lead to its current meaning, ‘crammed so tightly together as to prevent movement’.

GEORGE VANCOUVER 1757 – 1798

Immortalised by the Canadian city and island that bear his name, England-born explorer George Vancouver was barely in his teens when he enlisted with the Royal Navy. What’s more, he was soon sailing with Captain Cook aboard HMS Resolution on a voyage to the southern hemisphere spanning from 1772 to 1775. Vancouver also participated in Cook’s ill-fated exploration of the Hawaiian Islands, which ended in 1778. Vancouver set out in 1791 on an epic four-and-a-half year expedition to chart America’s northwest coast from Oregon to Alaska. This would become the longest

mapping exercise of its kind ever undertaken. Despite his achievements, however, the mariner fell out of favour with the political elite and died in 1798 at just 40.

ONBOARD | AUTUMN 2019 | 11 We must free

ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.

SOUTH AFRICAN CREW There’s a lot of chit chat surrounding the new regulations coming into force for South African crew from 1 March 2020 which could affect how much tax they have to pay in their home country. Before panicking, the best step is to seek professional advice. Do not ask Facebook where everyone is a (self proclaimed) ‘expert’. You will find too many different answers. Find out exactly how it affects YOU as everyone’s situation is unique.

CHARTER SEASON Well summer in the Med’s been a bit weird with charter figures lower than normal for the Balearics and the south of France. It seems that it’s not just Brexit affecting package holiday makers that are looking for cheap deals, even the mega wealthy are taking advantage of lower prices over in the Eastern Med and maybe a better level of service. The charterers have been favouring destinations further east.

MENTAL HEALTH Still a pressing topic in the yachting industry which shows no signs of abating. In January the MLC brought in new amendments tackling harassment and bullying on board, included in the health and safety policies. The other positive is that people are talking more about it, and this is a good thing.

FAST FASHION has been hit hard in the news this summer as brands have been targeted Have a google of ‘fashion sustainability’ and you’ll see that the fashion industry is the second biggest polluter in the world, only beaten by oil! Brands are slowly getting on board with making changes to their manufacturing processes, and companies such as Indetix (who own Zara) and H&M are all working on initiatives to tackle this.

LIFE COACHES With no formal qualifications other than having worked on a yacht (often briefly) they seem to be popping up to assist crew on a daily basis in their pursuit of happiness. How reliable this unregulated facet of help is, has yet to be seen… Surely crew would be better seeking professional assistance rather than talking to an ex-stew who’s charging them 600euro?!

RECYCLING Lack of facilities at ports is a regular gripe on current social media, as yacht crew are doing their best to restrict their carbon footprints and limit plastic waste, often they’re stuck between a rock and a hard place and are forced to sacrifice their new methods due to lack of support from marinas and yards.
