“There might be a slowdown, but there are also many positive factors that could outweigh this. There are many major infrastructure projects already under way or signed off, like HS2, the Thames Tideway Scheme and the Horizon nuclear power site in North Wales. The government also recently signalled its commitment to house building.”
Dave Roberts points out another interesting trend of many hirers increasing the size of machines in their fleet. “Over the years we have seen tool hirers operating just 1-tonne minis, but subsequently adding 1.5-tonne machines, then 3-tonne, 5-tonne and even 8-tonne in some cases, if depot space and workshop capacity allow. However, the demographics are interesting: some national or large regional players may concentrate on bigger machines for customers working on larger projects, leaving an opportunity for local independents to offer smaller models.
Buoyant global markets
“There is considerable variation in the mini sector however, and we do sell across the board from single units to landscapers and builders, to regional and local plant hirers, as well as the nationals.
At the moment, our strategy is simple, in that we are selling as many machines as we can secure from the factory, which are flat out as a number of global markets are buoyant, too. Nevertheless, our position in the mini excavator market gives us headroom to grow sales in volume terms, especially as the UK has been performing so strongly.”
With many major infrastructure projects already under way or signed off the outlook should remain positive.
Hitachi Construction Machinery will launch new models at the Bauma exhibition in Munich next April. Given its positive outlook and a market that has proved very resilient, perhaps the company’s light will shine more brightly in the compact plant sector in the future.
