WOOD RECYCLING FEATURE

Wood fi nes disposal simplifi ed with Wood Energy’s step grate burner

THE costs of waste wood disposal vary signifi cantly, especially when it comes to wood fi nes, but a step grate burner from Binder GmbH, designed and installed by Wood Energy Ltd, is the perfect solution. When taken into account, there are three major influencers such as location and volume of the material coupled with cleanliness. Waste wood end-markets are numerous but typically the major applications are the following: panel board, equine surfaces and animal bedding, mulches and soil conditioners, pathways and coverings, and of course for use as biomass fuel. Grade A waste wood material was, for the last few years at least, the predominant wood fuel for new installations, and due to new Environment Agency ruling Grades B/C, have taken over from Grade A.

What are wood fi nes?

Wood fi nes are usually dusty, gritty fi ne material that no-one seems to have a use for, and for which the majority of handlers are paying a hefty price to dispose of.

Step grate burner solution

Fines can safely and easily be disposed of in a biomass boiler – provided the right equipment is specifi ed to handle it. The step grate feeds in the material – in dust form and combustion – is rapid and consistent due to the fi ne and reasonably consistent nature of the fuel. And what is more, as long as the heat used is eligible for the Government’s RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) payment there is also a healthy fi nancial annual payment from the Government for the next 20 years – coupled this with the disposal cost savings, that could be provide a two-year payback, or less. A 1.2MW biomass WID (Waste Incineration Disposal) compliant boiler, running 8,000 hours per year would consume around 5,000 tonnes of wet (50% moisture content) fi nes. If the fi nes are currently costing £85/tonne to dispose of, the saving alone on the fi nes would be £425,000 per year without any RHI fi nancial support. Boilers can be any size up to 10MW. Wood Energy Ltd can create a bespoke,

compelling fi nancial business model for any business.

Reduce Disposal Costs

Burn wood fines and Grade B/C waste wood and use the heat for buildings or for drying RDF/SRF or other materials to save on gate fees.
