From acquiring Finlay Group to new footholds – 2018 has been a strong year for Molson Group


AS 2018 draws to a close, there is many a company that would hope to have had a year like the Molson Group. Originally found by Jonathan Wilson and Robin Powell in 1996, the largest independent plant dealer in the UK added to its growing prowess in June after the acquisition of Finlay Plant (UK) Limited and its subsidiary and associated companies (Finlay Group).


Acquisition


Through this acquisition, Molson successfully secured distribution rights for the complete range of Terex Finlay mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment for England, Wales and the Channel Islands. Therefore, Molson became distributors of Terex Finlay for most of the UK, adding to its position as the sole distributor of Kobelco construction products in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland); and works as the largest European dealer for Hyundai Construction Equipment. At the time, Robin Powell, Managing Director of Molson Group, said: “The success of the Finlay Group has been built upon a customer-centric philosophy to provide innovative products and solutions to the market.”


One of the main motivations behind the acquisition for the Finlay Group was because of the synergies already existing within the Molson organisation, which could provide the depth required to consolidate greater growth experienced by the Finlay Group in recent years.


The only way is up


A month later in July, Molson Construction Equipment, the UK’s largest distributor of capital equipment, received a £6.3m investment from BGF to support its growth strategy through building a new national parts centre and additional depots across the UK. BGF is the most active and infl uential investor in small and mid-sized businesses in the UK, which has a spending power of £2.5bn to support a range of companies at growth stage. With BGF’s signifi cant investment, Molson now comfortably operates from depots in Bristol, Warrington, London, Kent, Stratford Upon Avon, and Doune and

The company has also established Molson Green, a full line distributor in waste management and recycling equipment, off ering all the equipment required for the handling and processing applications. As of July, Molson Group recorded employment numbers at more than 200 people with annual revenue in excess of £155m. Robin said: “In recent years we have been focused on expanding our presence across the UK to provide national sales and after sales services to our customers. “This investment [by BGF] will enable us to implement our plans at pace, with the support of BGF and its wider network.”


Targets are set after new deal


In September, Molson Green became a dealer for Turmec, a leading waste management solutions provider based in County Meath, just north of Dublin. The deal saw the formalisation of a long- standing partnership between the two companies, which sees the addition of static recycling solutions to the Molson
