TWO men, who jointly-owned Grantscope Ltd, in South Yorkshire, were handed suspended prison sentences and ordered to pay back cash after an Environment Agency (EA) investigation. The defendants, Andrew Lawrence Green, 54, from Barnsley, and Dean Ryder, 54, of Doncaster, were handed suspended prison sentences and ordered to pay back hundreds of thousands of pounds. It was discovered this amount was illegally earned after a proceeds of crime hearing at Sheffi eld Crown Court on October 9. The Environment Agency’s Caron Osborne said: “Green and Ryder have been ordered to pay more than £250,000, which is a signifi cant
order that sends out a message to others who fl out the law that waste crime does not pay.”
The pair were also given a 200-hour unpaid Community Order (CO) following
their conviction for three separate off ences at Barnsley after an appeal hearing at Sheffi eld Crown Court in March 2016.
‘Crime does not pay’
During the Crown Court appeal, the court heard how Green and Ryder’s company, which went into liquidation on 12 September 2012, failed to comply with a Regulation 36 enforcement notice served by the EA in February 2012 following the illegal deposit of waste outside of its site in Barnsley.
Continued to operate in contravention of law
The company’s environmental permit was revoked, eff ectively ending its ability to operate at the site. Despite this, the defendants continued operation in contravention of the law. The court also heard the defendants accumulated a waste pile of nearly 13,000 tonnes before abandoning the waste.

Ryder must repay £138,002 within three months, while Green must repay £121,422.72 within three months or face prison.
