WASTE RECYCLING UNTHA prepares to raise the game in wood recycling

WOOD recycling has been an important 2018 focus for industrial shredder manufacturer UNTHA UK, with the launch of the QR shredder for the skip, warehousing and logistics sector. The team’s newest machine was engineered to tackle various waste materials, but its pallet shredding capabilities has attracted signifi cant attention this year. Developed in conjunction with waste handlers, operators have seen this high throughput, low maintenance technology process up to 30m³ per hour with impressive results.

UNTHA UK’s Managing

Director Marcus Brew, said: “The goal was to achieve trouble-free waste wood shredding, recycling and biomass production.

“The single-shaft machine can therefore produce high-quality fraction for wood chip, biomass or briquetting, but ease- of-confi gurability guarantees maximum fl exibility for what can often be a challenging business environment.” Key features of the QR include integrated gears, low wear parts and maintenance- free pusher technology for maximum yield and uptime; large chambers

and greater drive power for increased throughputs; and an interchangeable screen with 12-100mm diameter options for fraction homogeneity. Variable drive confi gurations also help to ensure optimum outputs. Marcus added: “The environmental landscape is complex and [often] volatile. “The low maintenance design means less headaches and increased uptime, which is important for operators with a keen eye on productivity, performance and profi tability.”

But always keen to be renowned for manufacturing next generation wood/

biomass shredders, UNTHA’s eff orts in this sector have not ceased there. Further engineering developments within the XR series means this waste shredder – available as either a static or mobile machine – guarantees defi ned biomass product quality. A P63 specifi cation is achievable in a single pass with 50% reduced energy consumption thanks to the revolutionary UNTHA Eco Drive. Marcus concluded: “Wood recyclers and biomass fuel producers are demanding more from their systems, and rightly so. This is only going to continue as we head into 2019.”

Devon doubles demand for food waste recycling

THE amount of food waste sent for recycling by Devon businesses has more than doubled in just 18 months with new fi gures from Andigestion. The county’s food waste recycling provider’s primary objective is to dispose of food and leftovers in a clean, green and eco-friendly way instead of sending it to landfi ll. Since the launch of its Andigestion’s Wheelie Bin Service at the end of 2016, the number of businesses signing up to the company’s food waste recycling service has increased steadily after the Devonshire-based fi rm started processing, on average, 3,500 bins per month. Mike Lowe, Operations Director at Andigestion, said: “Our Wheelie Bin Service has really taken off over the last year or so, with more and more businesses across the county playing a major role in reducing the amount of food waste going to landfi ll.” This rise in demand has also led to major investment in tripling the fl eet of collection vehicles and the recruitment of more drivers.

Businesses such as restaurants, pubs, hotels and leisure venues, as well as schools and colleges, can now signifi cantly reduce their environmental impact and improve their carbon footprint simply by sending all their food waste for recycling to Andigestion’s Holsworthy plant near Bude. This plant is the UK’s fi rst food-only anaerobic digestion facility which annually recycles approximately 76,000 tonnes of the county’s food waste. Mike added: “Customers can place food directly into our bins, whether packaged or unpackaged, cooked or uncooked.

“We can also take peelings,

out-of-date food, plate scrapings, damaged stock, and frozen or chilled foods.”

Businesses also benefi t from the Wheelie Bin Exchange – Andigestion’s promise to swap the full food waste bin for a fresh, steam-cleaned bin every time it’s collected. This incentive helps keep premises clean and hygienic with no mess, smells or liners for customers to worry about. Holsworthy’s anaerobic digestion process produces clean, green and eco-friendly electricity which is fed back into the national grid to supply around 10,000 local homes. The ‘digestate’ by-product of the process – a mineral-rich, liquid fertiliser – is used by local farmers as a sustainable alternative to carbon-intensive chemical fertilisers. Mike concluded: “This is the perfect solution for those businesses wishing to tackle food waste, reduce landfi ll and improve their eco-credentials, and we’re delighted that the scheme has received such an enthusiastic response.” The Wheelie Bin Service is ideal for small to medium-sized businesses producing from 20kg and up to one tonne of food waste per week.
