Waste consultants bSure ease asbestos worries that are plaguing skip industry
By Andy Wilshaw, waste consultant at bSure Testing Ltd
IT IS known homes built in the UK prior to 2002 contain an alarming amount of asbestos containing materials (ACMS), which over time has led to many health issues. Environmental inspections are vitally important to identifying ACMs, which is a current theme for the HSE and Environmental Health. Recently, Bsure Testing were contacted by east Devon-based Axe Skip Hire, after they were challenged by the Environmental Health to identify an ACM that had entered their skip illegally. Chelmsford-based bSure Testing Ltd consulted with Axe to establish what education and procedures needed to be introduced in order to protect and educate staff and customers. It was apparent that although the Axe staff had some asbestos awareness training, their customers could not be relied upon to
follow current legally binding asbestos disposal regulations. This has led to (perhaps because of genuine mistakes) contamination through negligence of Axe’s skips with asbestos fi bres and Axe’s staff being exposed as a result of this. Axe needed to alert their customers and identify ACMs in their skips quickly and easily, to keep within the disposal law themselves and to counter-charge for increased costs of disposal of ACMs and the decontamination work needed. Off ering an educational training consultation, bSure Testing Ltd also provided a postal testing service that is both effi cient, fast, independent, and accurate. This meant if artex (surface coating used for interior decorating), fl oor tiles, or roof tiles were found in a skip, they could be sampled using the bSure test kit and methodology. Those building materials would then be sent in the post to bSure’s UKAS-accredited lab for analysis. This procedure is audited and is a
certifi ed way of identifying materials containing asbestos. Analysis of the material is carried out the same day that the lab receives it. Details of the sample and the certifi cate are stored on our secure data base.
industry and increasing people’s knowledge on the exposure risks from ACMs is key to helping skip companies manage the risk of asbestos.
This is why all of bSure’s services are available to assist the people at the frontlines including builders, electricians, roofers and many more. Hopefully, with the help of the skip industry, bSure can start to limit the occasions ACMs are overlooked by the individuals hiring the skips, thereby costing the whole industry time, money and not to mention stopping the risk to life that asbestos poses.
